Weather Week: It's All Drought-y Out There

Against the wind...
In case you hadn't noticed, we haven't had a lot of rain lately. Under most circumstances, that's a good thing. We've had some seriously beautiful weather over the past week or two. And still, we need the rain. We may not be as dry as we were in 2011, when wildfires turned the state into Dante's Inferno, but the rain we have had hasn't been enough to turn things around in the drought department.

Unfortunately, this week won't help.

The first part of the week will be cool and breezy ahead of the arrival of a cool front late Tuesday. Temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 60s for highs and in the low 40s for lows through Thursday -- basically idyllic weather if you love the sun but don't want to melt.

After that, there is a chance of rain in the forecast, but not much.

The clouds return Friday and should stay with us throughout the weekend. Rain chances are hovering in the 30-50 percent range for Saturday and Sunday, but don't get your hopes up. We're not talking about the slow, steady stuff that soaks your lawn. This will more likely be the widely scattered shower variety, but we take what we can get.

By the early part of next week, the clouds should clear out and we should be a bit warmer with highs in the low to mid 70s. Could this finally mark the arrival of more spring-like weather? Long-range forecasts would seem to suggest that is the case. Sadly, they aren't predicting better than an average to below average chance of rain over the next month, however.

Oh, and in case you needed some more depressing news, Chron SciGuy Eric Berger gives us our first glimpse of the tropics in his weekly weather roundup. Yes, that's right, we're only three months from the opening of hurricane season and the water in the Gulf is already warmer than normal. Hooray!
