Cowboy Diaries 2013: Stran Smith, World Champion Roper
True cowboys are hard to find, but not at the Houston Rodeo. Life on the road leads them here this time every year for the biggest rodeo in the world, where they'll ride and wrangle livestock for cash and glory. Each day, Hair Balls will spotlight one person with enough dirt on his or her boots to call himself a cowboy -- or cowgirl -- and mean it.
Stran Smith, Calf roping
Name: Stran Smith
Hometown: Childress, Texas, a town of 6,500 -- but only 6,499 when I'm gone.
Event: Calf roping
I've been to RodeoHouston for 20 years now.
Any success along the way? Yep -- I won the World Championship in 2008 for calf roping, qualified for the national finals rodeo 11 times. But I love Houston, man.
My favorite part about RodeoHouston is the people. There's no place like it. The committee, the attention to detail. They're just the best here.
When I'm not rodeoing, I have three kids, so I'm constantly running around with them -- I'm the Little League coach, the basketball coach. They keep me plenty busy.
If I wasn't rodeoing, I'd be at home, raising cattle, raising some bulls. I'd be spending time with the family.
