Faces of Prostitution: Mugshots of the Women Busted in "Operation Red Light"

Feeding the jail system.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office led a multi-agency investigation into local prostitution, because apparently it was time to put an end to the World's Oldest Profession.

On the night of February 20, eight massage parlors were targeted, HCSO says, "as follow-up to the recently adopted Harris County Sexually Oriented Business Ordinances, and complaints by citizens of these businesses."

Sheriff's deputies arrested 16 people, and 48 fire-code violations were found.

"Our crime-fighting deputies will continue to bust SOBs for prostitution, illegal drugs, illegal gun possession, unlicensed serving of alcohol and other crimes, just like we have done before," Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. "But the county regulations will, among other things, allow us to work with the County Attorney's Office, the District Attorney's Office and the constables to prevent some of these unwanted businesses from opening in the first place."

So who got sent to jail as a result of "Operation Red Light"? These eight women were charged with violating the SOB ordinance, according to a release sent out by the HCSO (No, no men were included.):

Haha oh man. I wonder if any guys were caught and the cops were like "you've been through enough, just go home and take a chemical bath".

I don't know why you'd pay for sex with these women.  You could probably get similar at even the dumpiest of bars for only the cost of a few Vodka and Diet Sprites and Salem Lights.

Do these people wash their hands after scratching their asses before serving the food? How many roaches onboard?

Prostitution should not be illegal. It's a moral issue, not a crime. I'd never be one or go to one and I hope that none of my loved ones would be a prostitute or go to one, but I still think that it's a person choice what to do with their own body.

What were the addresses of these 'massage parlors'?  Just curious if they busted any in my neighborhood.

Why aren't the faces of the pimps who force these women to go out soliciting sex in your newspaper? This is atrocious! These women are not having sex for pleasure. The money goes to the guy who trafficks these women. Shame on you HoustonPress for publishing these pictures! Appalling!

Oh no! Sex workers among us!

What has the US become? Mutually consenting adults trading sex for money? I for one sees neither a need for the demand or the supply of sex. It's evil! Should only be used to create babies among loving, married couples.

@arenandmary  Why do you assume there is a male pimp behind everyone of these women? That's offensive to enterprising females, and shows you don't know the business much. An immigrant woman, or country bumpkin, who comes here with poor language skills, little money and education has a couple options: she can work for minimum wage and live below the poverty level. Or, she can use her skills and god-given body to earn far more. And not while being beaten and raped as you imply.

It's often little more than a massage with a happy ending, the tips to the sex worker in that case being $60-$100 for less than an hour's work. Her shop would get $30-$90, depending on the session being a half or full hour. The women eat together, gossip together, laugh together. The younger ones sometimes are going to school. Other women come in and out, getting their nails and hair done.

I'm not saying pimps don't exist. I'm not saying that some women are held against their will. I'm just saying that most of the time it's a business with the sex workers filling a demand for sexual release, and getting paid very well for it. So there's no shame on the women who choose it, and there's no shame in them advertising their business just as a dentist or handyman does. Unless, of course, you're a moralizing, judgmental prig.

@Stilton @arenandmary I've seen plenty of those shops you discuss, and the young girls that come in, are put in those predicaments, and then get pregnant and either "disappear" from the store front or are force-married to some nasty old man are nothing more than sex-trade victims.  Let's not pretend that this is a legit, respectable business.  They are nothing more than coyotes forcing their victims into a sex trade in order to pay their way into the country.

@Stilton @arenandmary Clearly you have chosen to pay prostitutes for sex. Your statement explains how simple it all is. OK then, you chose your daughter, mother, sister, daughter, aunt or grandmother for the glowing career choice. Better yet, sell your own body with no other income. We will have a conversation in a few months about how clean all of this is.

@meldavis_99 @Stilton @arenandmary the problem with prostitution is that as it is against the law, these women do not have any real way to protect themselves from the situation, should they choose the profession.

if a person is a prostitute, likely they don't see an outlet in going to the police for protection from a pimp, since they'll get protection from the pimp by being sent to jail.

the best way to protect people from being taken advantage of (although it seems counter intuitive) is to make prostitution legal.

it could also be said that people who feel that prostitution is the only way out would not be thrust directly into a dangerous world with pimps and criminals.

@arenandmary @Stilton  So if someone knows the ins and outs of football that means that they play football?

You don't seem to read well. The poster is not saying that he would choose prostitution for his sister or himself, just that society ought not to ban another person from choosing it as a profession. More importantly, he's pointing out that often it IS a choice that like most jobs has upsides and downsides. But it's not like a tv police show where pimps are always forcing girls to do this and skimming the income between beatings.
