It Ain't Racial, It's Just That Almost 80 Percent Of White Texans Support Mitt Romney

Might as well write off (white) Texas, dude
There hasn't been much presidential polling in Texas for good reason this cycle -- with Rick Perry disastrously out of the race, why bother?

But the good folks at WPA Opinion Research have filled the void with a new post-Dem-convention survey, and no one should be surprised that it shows President Obama struggling badly in thee Lone Star State.

What's appalling/amusing/maybe not shocking is the racial/ethnic makeup of that cohort he's struggling to win over.

The poll shows that Romney overall has a 55-40 lead in the race to get Texas' electoral-college votes; among voters who describe themselves as "white" the former Massachusetts governor's support jumps to 77 percent.

(Yes, reversing it shows 90 percent of black Texans support Obama.)

We weren't sure 77 percent of white Texans could agree on anything, but we guess there's just something magical about the Mitt name and brand.

Chris Perkins of the polling firm told the Texas Tribune he thought Obama would have done better overall since the survey came out in the midst of what was a slight convention bounce.

"I thought the Obama number would be a little bit better," Perkins said. "It wasn't there. It's kind of lining up to what 2008 did -- if not better -- for [Senator John] McCain."

The results are based on telephone interviews with 1,004 respondents Sunday through Tuesday.

That number, which sounds suspiciously like a factoid (seriously, when someone makes something up, it's always 80%). is probably somewhere closer to 55 % and reflects the decline in educational and moral standards over the last 50 years. I'm white, so is my wife, and we despise Mitt Rmoney because he is essentially un-American in his oligarchical way.

Well facts are facts.. 8.1 % unemployment (lies it much higher), 46.7 food stamp receivers (entitlement generation) The Muslim flags behind OBAMA' back in OUR WHITE HOUSE, our embassy's bombed and innocent people killed in the name of JIHAD, our current president thinks it is much more important to CAMPAIGN while embassy's are under attack, this president ( OBAMA) has no CLUE who his ALLIES are? Bottom line white and or black ....I will not vote this TRASH for president ....so if the choice is a white man and it is ...there ya go ... Romney for president simple as.

Now that Palin is no longer on the ticket, many people feel it is safe to vote Republican again.

Hell, it would be nice if a few journalists did a "What's in it for YOU" type of utilitarian/selfish-guy dissection of the opposing positions. I meet so many of the middle and lower Texan underclass who think that somehow Romney might be a change for the better. These delusions are sadly amazing and point to why Texas could elect someone like Rick Perry over and over again...and then wonder why we're all working part-time selling raffle tickets and candles and candy bars for our kid's education and sports participation. Just sick that no one connects the dots.

Once more, anyone here saying they are voting for Romney based on policy care to defend their choice with facts?

Its not a racial matter! Obama has been one of the best president we've had! Do you remember what it was like to have a Republican in the office because i do! I remember a recession and war! Obama chose to use our tax money on things that matter like morals, values, health care, education, technology, and humanity! People are just so accustomed to having a bad guy in the office and are lure by their lies! War! war! war! And on top of that more war! Violence is not the answer to the lack of money! Education is!

I couldn't care less the color of skin. I say we do a "Hunger Games" style elimination to see the Strongest and Smartest one win. Words mean very little to a generation that grew up hearing a bunch of BS only to see them fulfill the needs of the lobbyist that helped get them elected first. Cut the 500 point plans, forget the mud slinging, and for we may have someone who will LEAD this country back to greatness with skill and determination. Someone who will be able to tell all the tit suckers out there to start contributing and not only be able to say it with great conviction and an unapologetic tone but also be able to provide the means to do so.

Was there a poll for percentage of African Americans in Texas voting for Obama? I love you, but don't act like this is coming from a bipartisan state of mind, Houston Press.

Right, corpratist people, corpratist. Lol which doesn't mean much when you consider that our system is corpratist and about 90% of our politicians are such.

I'm voting for Obama – just like last time. I am also white. And I know my vote will be meaningless in Texas, but no matter what you think of our president, you also need to admit that Romney is not fit to be president. And that smug Paul Ryan needs a baseball bat taken to his dome.

If the percentage was actually higher for the black people voting for Obama, shouldn't that have been the headline?  I'm confused.

I enjoy the fact that you can go to a liberal or conservative leaning conversation, switch out the labels, and its the exact same conversation. Most conservatives seem to think small government means a government who tries to institute morality through law at home, and builds bases and embassies around the world to protect "American interests" ...well that's not small by any stretch of the imagination.

I believe that some whites are still in denial. Socioeconomic factors is what most people base there vote on. I don't believe its a sign of racism but a matter of prejudice along those factors. People are going to vote for those who they can relate to. For people, in more population dense and racially mixed areas they more likely to choose someone who comes from that and the same goes for vice versa. Texas has a large white population outside of its metropolitan areas, But considering that Texas has always had a unscrupulous past when its come to race, these results don't surprise me one bit.

I really don't believe it is racial on the part of whites. I believe Republicans would have voted for any of the black candidates being considered to run on the Republican platform. I know I would. I do suspect that many of the blacks voting for Obama do it for racial reasons.

lorenallardyce

I can't believe this is even a topic.  Annoying.  Unflattering.  And just plain stupid.  I guess if a white person supports another white person, they must be racist.  Geez.  Give me a break.

I'd be curious to see what the republican/democrat percentages were in previous elections, could be a spurious correlation having a lot more to do with what way the parties lean than who the person on the ticket is.

But go ahead and play that race card and try and gin up some controversy.
