Comment of the Day: The Need for Motorcycle Helmets, Dammit

Categories: Whatever

We have some great commenters here on Hair Balls, and it's time we paid some damn attention to them.

So we'll be highlighting a Comment of the Day each morning or afternoon from the previous day's work. Maybe two comments, even.

This will all be determined by a highly rigorous scientific formula involving wit, clarity and whatever else we feel like at the moment.

We wrote about the untimely death of Houston artist Jeremy Choate, killed when a car rammed into the motorcycle he was riding. We noted he wasn't wearing a helmet, and pleaded with bikers to use common sense.

One reader agreed.

Winny wrote:

Thank you for publishing this piece. It's sad that Choate was killed, but simple common-sense safety measures might have saved his life. Not wearing a helmet is akin to driving after drinking - it's a risk you take, deliberately, and it's less than honest to pretend Choate didn't make a bad choice.

Wow...  so I guess everyone there IS a douche, and we thought it was just Mr. McCoy.... from the comment you picked it looks like everyone there at houston press is just shit from the same toilet....

No one is "pretending Choate didn't make a bad choice", and if you really believe that, you're a simple minded idiot with shit for brains...In spite of agreeing that wearing helmets is crucial, I don't know what SHIT you've been smoking lately, that would make someone even compare not wearing a helmet to drinking and driving...   with picking this as the comment of the day you again confirm the MORONIC choice of blaming the victim and deflecting blame from the drunk driver.Any publicity is good publicity I guess...  congrats on the hits you're getting from being devoid of any empathy or common sense. Can't wait for your piece on how it's crucial to dress conservative in order to avoid rape and how if it weren't for those sluts poor choice in clothing they would still be virgins....

Just when I thought the gross lack of respect was limited to Terrence McCoy. Really, Mr. Connelly? I'm pretty disappointed that you would aid in promoting this ridiculousness.

Wow, the bulk of the comments called out McCoy for his extreme insensitivity and victim-blaming, yet you ignore all that and cherry pick a comment supporting him. Totally classless.

@myers_mark Everything about this situation is classless.  They're trying to gin up controversy for hits.  Disgusting.
