Ashlyn Treadway: Courageous Survivor of Molestation, Killed in Car Wreck

Ashlyn Treadway's courage to speak up cost her nearly everything.
Ashlyn Treadway, 23, who was scorned by her paternal grandfather, a Pentecostal pastor, and many in her Beaumont church after she accused her uncle of molesting her, was killed in a single-car accident in Liberty County Saturday night. Her younger sister, Brea, a passenger in the car, is recovering from a broken pelvis and arm.

Treadway appears to have lost control of the car about a quarter-mile from her maternal grandparents' Moss Hill home, where she and Brea lived. According to YourClevelandNews, Ashlyn died at the scene.

The sisters' ordeal was the subject of a 2007 feature story we did entitled "Sleepovers with Uncle Jeff" that detailed how they were molested by their uncle, Beaumont cardiologist Jeffrey Klem, and ostracized by their grandfather, Pastor Lonnie Charles "Buck" Treadway of New Life Tabernacle. According to friends and family, Buck Treadway called his granddaughters liars and whores after they spoke up about their abuse. (Ashlyn's younger stepsister was also allegedly abused, as was a friend of theirs.)

After summoning the guts to accuse a respected family member of abuse, Ashlyn, Brea and the two other victims then experienced the timidity of prosecutors in Jefferson and Harris counties who didn't believe the girls' testimonies were enough to take on Klem's defense attorneys, including Dick DeGuerin. Instead, prosecutors in both counties agreed to plea bargains that sent Klem to jail for six months (on weekends) and deferred adjudication, allowing him to escape the sex offender registry.

Ashlyn told the Houston Press that kid-glove treatment of wealthy defendants "is the reason why kids don't come out and say anything" about abuse.

Ashlyn saddled a lot of guilt after the abuse, blaming herself for what she believed was her failure to protect her sisters. For two years, Ashlyn took to cutting herself with a bobby pin or a nail.

She told the Press: "It's like it wasn't me. It wasn't me, it was all the anger held up in me, because I didn't say anything and I needed to...."

Ashlyn's friend Ashley Sylvester of Beaumont told us this morning that Ashlyn was working on a dental hygienist degree at Lone Star Community College.

I am so sick of people defending him, HE ADMITTED IT! He plead guilty, he told us he did it. Is there really anything else to say?!

Maybe she was a lying whore, did anyone think of that?  Or that not PC to y'all?  The DAs constantly charge people that are also wealthy.  But with wealth also comes with a good attorney instead of some court apoointed piece of garbage.  So you people think that just cuz the dude has money he gets off, is that it?

What if EVERYONE got a good quality attorney just like a rich guy did?  How many of those cases do you think the DAs would win?  Maybe the wealthy seem to get off so much is because the DAs are so used to filing bogus or weak charges against people who can't afford to fight back.  But when they come up against a guy with money, they soon realize their tricks won't work on them so they have to either dismiss or plea it wayyy down.

The rich don't get off because they are rich.  They get off cuz the DAs all suck ass at their job and the rest of us get stuck with shitty court appointed lawyers.

These people are the lowest form of scum, thankfully their true colors have been shown. I'm just so sorry she had to suffer for them to be revealed. She is finally at peace, I do not wish the same for them.

Thank you for this article. I believe your accurate presentation of detailed facts that were suppressed years ago (due to them being underage) will allow people who were in denial of the girls' allegations to see that they were truthful. I'm sure some friends, family and enemies may give you flack over the timing of the article and the bluntness but overall you did a good deed. Some may get upset and claim this is old news only revamped due to the tragedy but it was not old news to the girls and they live(d) with it every single day. Thank you again for this article and vindication for Ashlyn.

A truly sad loss... I admired her courage to stand up to those that had abused her. Wish she had more of a chance at the life she was working towards.

@klansman To quote you, "Maybe she was a lying whore, did anyone think of that?"

Now to quote the article, "Ashlyn, Brea and the two other victims"

So does that mean they are four whores? Or can you not read for content because your judgment is too clouded by resentments?

Quit trying to slut shame victims. It's not only not PC, but instead puts the true shame on your face. Get a grip and realize this is not the Salem witch hunt here.

@klansman Gee. This comment seems...balanced and unbiased.

@klansman You must be a Treadway, or a follower of the cancer ridden bastard. Either way,  you obviously are a clueless asshole. It has nothing to do with the quality of his attorney, it has to do with the fact of 4 different girls claiming sexual abuse from this sadistic prick. Innocent men do not plead guilty, period. I'm not sure who you are referring to when you say the rest of us, I have never required the services of a court appointed lawyer. This man should have been served a much harsher punishment, just by comparison standards. Of course I have a personal stake in this, I loved Ashlyn dearly and  you my friend can rot in hell.  I hope your penis falls off you low life sack of shit.
