Comment of the Day: Cat Killings Could Signal the Birth of a Serial Killer

We have some great commenters here on Hair Balls, and it's time we paid some damn attention to them.

So we'll be highlighting a Comment of the Day each morning or afternoon from the previous day's work. Maybe two comments, even.

This will all be determined by a highly rigorous scientific formula involving wit, clarity and whatever else we feel like at the moment.

Our post about the gruesome and continuing cat killings in Inner Loop neighborhoods caused several readers to offer an analysis of what kind of person would do something like this.

Crime Stoppers offered its standard "up to $5,000" reward for information, but some people thought that wasn't enough.

As Guest wrote:

Why only $5,000 for the reward?? Most people who torture and kill animals move on to serial killing. Do we have to wait till this person is doing this to humans before we really get involved?? This is disgusting and dangerous behavior and it needs a lot more attention than what it's getting.

Reading comments below.  I've found that how a person feels about cats is a pretty good index to their character.

It's not right to torture any animal, but if he's only killing cats, it could be that he doesn't like them. If he moves on to another kind of animal it could signal something bad and he would need psychiatric help. It wouldn't hurt him now, before he can move on to other animals or people. Hopefully he will never kill or torture any people but he does need an evaluation to find out the reason for it and the risk of doing it to people some day.

I agree, change "most" to "some".

I would not say that most people that torture and kill animals move on to serial killing, but cruelty to animals is actually one of three behaviors (firestarting and bedwetting are the other two) that some criminal profilers use to screen for serial killers.  The science to support is somewhat suspect but this comment is not completely out of left field.

"Most people who torture and kill animals move on to serial killing."  BS.
