Is It a Perfect Game If It's Against These Astros?

Categories: Sports

Plenty of good seats available.
As you might have heard, San Francisco Giant Matt Cain threw a perfect game against the Astros last night on the West Coast, retiring all 27 hitters with no hits, no walks, no errors.

To which we say, eh.

Against these Astros? We'd say it was more of an accomplishment that the Giants, who struggle to score nightly, put up 10 on the `Stros. But that just takes us back to the "against these Astros?"

We know, we know -- they're a fun, hungry bunch of gritty youngsters living their dream of playing in the bigs. And the minor leagues are thisclose to again becoming something resembling a solid operation that produces pros.

But the team seems to be backsliding into last year's stunning ineptitude, and that's just no fun to watch.

The view of the final out from the cheap seats of the Giants' beautiful ballpark:

Actually, most regular-season perfect games are against last-place teams (and until Randy Johnson's against the Braves, they ALL were).  Should we go ahead and asterisk all of those, too?

Seriously. Then why don't the Astros get a perfect game pitched against them every night? Lay off the hateraid.

This is a very disappointing article. Not the sour grapes asterisk of the St. Louis Dispatch following Johan Santana's no-hitter, but this is pretty close.  Yes, it's still a perfect game. It would've counted if it were against the Padres, or the Mariners, the Athletics, Cubs, or even the Pirates. The Astros hit, and get on base better than all those teams, and should a no-hitter or perfect game happen against those teams previously listed (and Matt Cain almost did it against the Pirates, too) those games would still count to the people involved with, and the supporters of baseball.
