Parents Sue School District for "Violently" Washing Stinky Son

The boy in question allegedly did not smell anything like success.

Parents of an 8-year-old boy are suing a Fort Worth-area school district, saying a teacher and school nurse, ostensibly objecting to the child's fetid stench, stripped him, gave him a whore's bath with a washcloth and stuck cotton balls in his ears.

Michael and Amber Tilley allege in federal court that the Peaster Independent School District, about 30 miles north of Forth Worth, targeted their kid because of a long-running feud the parents have continually requested "appropriate educational services" for their other, older son.

While neither admitting nor denying that their kid reeked, the parents claim that the boy's teacher, Julie West, "told him that he smelled badly, was dirty, and that he had bad hygiene" when the kid went to school on November 15, 2011. West then dragged the lad to nurse Debbie Van Rite's office, where the two women told him to disrobe and take a shower, according to the suit. (The parents told a local news station that their kid didn't stink, but then again, what are they going to say? Perhaps the parents stink, but enjoy their own earthy funk, and therefore can't understand why anyone would object. It's a crazy world, you know).

When the boy objected, the women "forced" him to strip, then "began violently washing his body with a washcloth, scrubbing him over [a] large portion of his body, stuck cotton balls in his hears, all while ridiculing and harassing him about being 'dirty,'" the parents claim.

But the torment didn't end there: per the suit, the women forced the boy to slap on some deodorant and admonished that "If you ever come to school dirty again, we will strip you buck naked and throw you in the shower and scrub you down." Additionally, the women allegedly told him that they would "spray him and his backpack so that he did not 'smell.'"

The parents filed a complaint with the Parker County Sheriff's Office, which "elected to [not] take any further action," according to the suit. The boy suffered "severe emotional trauma" and "is exhibiting OCD-type behaviors, such as taking numerous baths a day, constantly cleaning his ears, and spraying himself with large amounts of cologne."

Well, if that's the case, it doesn't seem like anyone can accuse the boy of stinking up the place anymore (unless he's dousing himself in Drakkar Noir).

The Weatherford Democrat reports that West and Van Rite told Sheriff's investigators that "one spoke with the child about his hygiene because he was dirty, and one of them cleaned behind and inside his ears and his neck." They also told him he "could use the shower at school if needed," and he was also given deodorant, according to the story.

District superintendent Matt Adams said the district conducted its own investigation and that there was "nothing to substantiate those allegations," according to the paper.

Okay, we hate to say it, but it needs to be said: something smells fishy here. We have a feeling there's much more to the story -- we have a nose for these things, HEY-OH! -- so we'll stay on top of it.

Grad school is full of adults. Elementary school age kids do not have adult B.O.

This is not junior high. The kid is 8. He doesn't even have the physical development to have the kind of B.O. kids have in junior high.

I seriously doubt that an 8 year old had "pungent B.O." Prepubescent kids have inactive apocrine glands. Apocrine glands, the ones that make us stinky when we sweat, do not become active until puberty.  And even if he did smell, the appropriate thing to do would be to call his parents and have a conference about his hygiene. Removing his clothing, telling him he was dirty and smelly, etc, are all abusive.

I've been in a classroom where a fellow student smelled so badly that I actually hworked. If you don't think pugent BO is a distraction for the other students and the teacher, you're mistaken.
