Natalie Johnson: "Meth, weed and tequila made me do it" defense was a flop.
An Angelina County district court judge has brought the hammer down on a 33-year-old Diboll woman who was recently convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old boy. Despite a tearful apology and plea for forgiveness, judge Barry Bryan sentenced Natalie Johnson to 25 years in prison.

According to the Lufkin Daily News, Johnson told the court she was addled by drugs and booze when her monthlong relationship with the boy was ongoing. She claimed that she was trying to cope with her mother's terminal illness and often resorted to marijuana and crystal meth, though never, she told the court, when the boy was around. On those occasions, she said, she stuck strictly to tequila, but also admitted that she got the boy drunk at least once.

According to earlier published reports, the couple had sex approximately seven times last summer. Johnson was a longtime friend of her victim's parents and had a 13-year-old son of her own.

The boy would rendezvous with Johnson after sneaking out of his grandparents' home in the middle of the night. Some of the encounters took place in a park and others in Johnson's apartment. Investigators later found over 1,500 calls and text messages between Johnson and the boy.

Jessica Cooley of the Lufkin Daily News was at the trial and we'll let her pick up the story:

"I'd like to ask all of you for your forgiveness," Johnson said through tears to the victim's family. "This wasn't something I would normally do and I'm truly, truly sorry."

As Johnson has been a friend of the victim's family for years and has a 13-year-old son of her own, the boy's mother said the apology fell on deaf ears.

"I wanted to tell her 'how would you feel if I did this to your son?'" the boy's mother said shaking her head. "Twenty-five years was what I wanted. I wanted my son to be old enough to handle it when she gets out of prison."

Cooley also reported that Johnson's attorney tried to make hay with the fact that Johnson had never run afoul of the law before this incident. Prosecutor Layne Thompson shredded that argument by pointing out that she admitted to committing felonies -- purchasing and using meth, specifically -- right there in court.

"To say you have no felony charges really just means you're lucky, doesn't it?" Thompson asked. Cooley reported that Johnson was "snappy" when she answered in the affirmative.

Johnson had been behind bars since August, so she will have a healthy head start on her sentence.

Defense horrible!  Should have plead and taken a deal rather than get on the stand and admit other crimes.

Why is 25 years too harsh? If it were a man with a young female you all would be saying "Good, scum of the earth..." But since its a woman and a boy its too harsh?! That is ridiculous. She deserves it, junkie rapists go to jail. End. Of. Story.

Man, she give "meth, weed and tequila" a bad name.

I agree with the previous commenter, though--if it were a man and a young teenaged girl, the sentence wouldn't be that lengthy.

I wonder how people would comment if it was the other way around, a man instead of a woman a 13 year old girl instead of boy, 25 years wouldn't be too harsh then would it , gotta love humanity advanced apes

Typically the prosecutor offers a plea deal to lesser charge and far less prison time. But if one decides to go to trial, the prosecutor always insists on longer sentence. Only an idiot defense attorney would think taking it to trial would be worth the risk.

The Judge was just trying to accomodate her affinity for stiff things.  Pretty fitting if you ask me.  If you don't want to go to prison, then don't diddle the kiddies.  It's simple really,

Very steep since it was a woman on a boy...realistically there IS a difference..Young boys pray for something like this.

But it is hypocritical of all of us, if it were a man committing the offense there would be posts here with all the myriad ways of punishing him.

25 years seems far too steep a sentence.

25 years is pretty lengthy for statutory rape. Are there other charges? Didn't see a mention if it was combined for any of the drugs or alcohol distribution to a minor.

A pound of meth should include intent to distribute plus possession charges, but to only get probation?! Hmm. Either he had a well-connected and expensive defense attorney or he turned confidential informant. Or he was just he//a lucky lol.

That is wrong.  But still, when I was 13 that would've rocked my world.  25 years is a joke, what is wrong with this judge???

How much you get for murder, armed robbery, assault and violent rape? 25 year sentence is insane.

I am pretty sure that there were no lesser charges. I think her defense strategy seriously backfired on her, and I agree that sentence is pretty harsh.

It sure as hell is when you consider that many men don't get that much for violent rape.

But, she will probably get 3 for 1 and be out in five years or less.

I've seen more than a few cases like this where they get out in a year or two on shock probation.
