Councilman Jerry Davis Wears "Trayvon Martin" Hoodie to Meeting

Houston city councilman Jerry Davis donned a hoodie at yesterday's meeting in support of protests over the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Davis, who's represented District B since January, said minorities still face unequal treatment by law enforcement.

"The last few days I've been wearing my hoodie," he told colleague. "When I was in high school, a simple, simple thing -- I was arrested. Someone said I stole a purse at a specific area. I was not there, I was actually at lacrosse practice with about 32 other kids. But for some reason they had some evidence that stated that I was at this particular place. I was arrested, embarrassed at school, my mom and dad had to pay money for a lawyer that we did not have the money to do so, and here we are 20 years later and we just cannot get an arrest on someone we know did a certain action."

He also talked about his cousin Robert Tolan, who was shot unarmed in his driveway by Bellaire police in 2008.

Davis spoke without incident, unlike Congressman Bobby Rush, who wore a hoodie on the house floor the same day and was reprimanded and told to leave.

You can see the video of Davis speaking by clicking on the "Matters to be presented to council" item on this menu.

Actually he's making a pretty good point/protest by his actions!  I'm white and oddly enough I wear hoodies, particularly in the Fall and Winter, no one bothers me or accuses me.  It's a very practical item of clothing.  Doesn't make me any more likely to be a crook, just a jogger or someone getting to the stores in a hurry.  How you perceive a person on their choice of dress is all in the minds of the holier-than-thou elderly.  As a white man in a hoody no doubt to them I'm automatically redneck trailer-trash who buys his clothes from Walmart, but put a black man in a hoody and he's just got to be up to no good.  Although I will say that a white man in a black hoody, yes a white man, once tried to car-jack me.  I was saved by a fast moving electric window, and some quick reactions.

As a Republican, white, gray-haired 60-year-old woman walking my teeny little dog, I was mistaken for a thug because I was wearing a hoodie. Thank Jeebus that person didn't have a gun.

Yeah, and that councilperson looks ridiculous.

Just walk around downtown and you can see people dressed as criminals. A bunch of Richard Nixon and Andrew Fastow wannabes in their power suits, fetishizing the criminal lifestyle with their business golf meetings. I always keep myself armed in case I catch one about to steal a couple million dollars. If the SEC or the police won't do it, then it falls to citizens to patrol our own neighborhoods. I have the right to defend my family and our retirement funds.

One time I spotted Angelina Jolie in New Orleans wearing a hoodie and sunglasses.  I called the cops right away because she looked like trouble.

I don't understand why they want to look like retards, but then again they have an average IQ of 85.

"...someone we know did a certain action."  It would seem someone on the city council for the 4th largest city in America would know at least something about due process and innocent until proven guilty. Who elected this guy??

Sorry folks.....but he looks like a thug sitting there.  Most people in warm climates wear hoodies, just not the hood part, for the fashion side of it.  When the hood is worn in spring time....yes you look like a hood-lem.  Denver is a city where you might need the hood....but then again, I lived there and you don't see people where them that often there either.....even in the winter.  Most will wear hats.  I would not suggest wearing the hood, in the springtime, in a gated community, riding a bike.  It would be like me wearing a mask and walking through river oaks.

if you look like a hood, what did you expect?

Likewise I live in Neartown/Montrose, and some of the better crooks I've heard of (typically white middle-class DINK's) live in those big 3 story town-homes that have no doubt appeared 'over-night' to cast a shadow over your little 1940's home...  It's like living in Miller's Death of a Salesman... Some of them wear suits and some of them wear hoodies... A bunch of cash alone (more likely credit for most of them) doesn't make you honest...

Who's "they"? Teenagers? Black people? Black teenagers? Either way, let's see a citation of this average IQ claim.

Wearing a normal item of clothing, even when you deem it weather-inappropriate, is not the same thing as wearing a mask and it's absurd to suggest it is. And even if you were masked, you don't deserve to get shot.

white criminals wear hoodies too in addition to suits and ties

Wyatt

Yeah, I'd start with "Not getting shot for (what looks like) no good reason." Rights don't extend only to those who wear clothing items you personally approve of, guy.

I'm not. I live in Montrose and some people who don't actually live in the hood get a little nervous after. Thanks for calling me Grandma altho my g'daughter has a pet name for me.

YEAH! You are under an obligation to prove your opinion to Wyatt! He demands it!  Oh brother...

Completely true Monica, the best crooks wear suits and ties and are likely to say good morning/howdy to their neighbors.  How one person views/judges another is all in down to having a skewed perception to start with.  I once stopped at a well known store to buy a gift in a three-piece suit (work day) and was greeted at the door by a security man who also thanked me when I left.  I went back there a week later in jeans and a t-shirt and the same guy followed me around the store...  True story...  So my costume made me a pillar of the community one day, and a potential shop-lifter another day...

Martin had on a hoodie so Zimmerman just walked up and shot him because of it. Right, guy?

That is not an opinon, sorry.

It was his opinion, brainiac.

He's under no obligation. If he wants to look like the kind of person who posts unsubstantiated bullshit, that's his prerogative.

Of course. You know she has got to get her camera time. She suggested he might have injured himself. Just another racebaiter hopping on the band wagon.

You are assuming he "aggressively approached" him. You are assuming his pistol was visible. You also assuming it was because he was black and had a hoodie on. A whole lot of assumption going on.

And those interment pics after having his head 'slammed on the concrete' showed no blood or bruises. What's with that? Must have been a truly savage attack.

Gawd, has she weighed in on this?  Does she ever keep her  mouth shut?  Or shun a camera?

Wyatt
Wyatt

Also, IF he did slam his head, maybe it was malicious on Martin's part. Or maybe a teenager out alone at night being tailed by a strange adult male (not in uniform, and possibly visibly armed) was simply "standing his ground." I don't pretend to know what happened, but I do know that arming yourself and aggressively approaching a young man who is not committing any crime, at night, simply because he's wearing a hoodie and very likely because he is black, is pretty ridiculous, no matter the outcome. Don't you agree?

Wyatt
Wyatt

 I didn't. Picture?

Does justify deadly force. I'm guessing you didn't see the wound on the back of his head? Maybe you are like SJL and think he did it to himself?

Wyatt
Wyatt

Does what? That doesn't make any sense in this context. And I'd take a bet with you on whether that actually happened.

How about the right not to have your skull bashed against concrete?

Yeah, American law and basic human rights don't  apply in gated communities, fool!

Grammyx2grammyx2

First of all it wasn't a public street to my understanding itt was a gated community!

Wyatt

Look up strawman, and concentrate real hard on understanding the concept.

Wyatt
Wyatt

I didn't say that, but good try. I was responding to fxk's idea that wearing a hood should be associated with the expectation of losing your right to walk down a public street without being molested.
