Kaylan Goodman: Her Company's Owner, Who Has a Warrant Out for His Arrest, Says 18-Year-Old Girl Is Just Fine! UPDATE: Safe Return

Categories: Whatever

Kevin Davis: The company he works for is totally legit and non-sleazy, so you don't have to worry.

Update: Kaylan is back in Bay City. Her sister, Lorrie Goodman, told Hair Balls this morning that Kaylan flew from St. Louis to Houston last night, after Lrumar owner Kevin Davis contacted their father. Davis offered to put her on a plane if her father bought a ticket and stopped talking to the media, Lorrie said. Oddly, according to Lorrie, Davis had allegedly told Kaylan that she'd be returning in three days, so Kaylan right now thinks this is just a brief stay. Yeah, we find the whole thing weird, too. We hope to speak with Kaylan today for more information.

Although an Oklahoma woman who suddenly vanished after joining a traveling magazine sales crew was located in Illinois Wednesday night and was allowed to call family, she's still in the custody of some really sketchy people.

Kaylan Goodman's family, who live in Bay City, became worried when 18-year-old Kaylan suddenly cut off her utilities and quit her job in order to take off with some dude named Scott Biddle to allegedly sell magazine subscriptions for a sham outfit called Lrumar Publications and/or Lucretius Phocylides.

Kaylan's grandparents told us in an e-mail that, "While her family was talking to Kaylan on the phone, her manager Scott Biddle was [coaching] her in what to say. They heard Mr. Biddle tell her to inform her family that she did not want to have any communication with them. They heard Mr. Biddle tell Kaylan to say 'stop pursuing her return to us.' We told Kaylan we would not stop until she was home. Mr. Biddle told Kaylan to tell us that if we continued to try and locate her, we would never find her -- it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack."

It's anyone's guess as to what Kaylan knows about her name and face being splashed all over media in Texas and Oklahoma. Mag crews generally have a brainwashing period where new recruits are completely cut off from their families, and all media. No phones. No e-mail. Nada. (Mag crew leaders, like Biddle, can do as they please, hence Biddle's genius Facebook pics of his beloved medical marijuana and posts about how much he drank the night before, bra. Really, it's like no one in this sleazebag industry even pretends to make it look legit.)

But we were surprised to get a call from Lrumar's owner, although he won't admit to being the owner. His name is Kevin Eugene Davis, and he has a warrant out for his arrest, out of Colorado Springs, for a weird charge called possession of marijuana concentrate. Davis, of course, told us he wasn't aware of any such charge. Furthermore, he said he wouldn't be hard for authorities to find.

"I live in Denver, so...they can come to my house anytime they want," he told us. "Been in my penthouse for the last three weeks."

He also told us that he wasn't the owner, and that "The owner's name is Kevin Bacon and he lives in Puerto Rico. Actually, there's five different owners." That sort of set the tone for the whole discussion -- when we asked where Kaylan's crew was headed next, he told us they were headed from Illinois to Los Angeles, where they were going to fly to Honolulu. (The name "David Bacon" has also been listed as the company's owner. Another known Davis alias is "Roy York." Davis has also given police a plethora of different dates of birth; records show 5/8/64, 5/8/67 and 5/8/68. He told us his true birth date is July 22, 1961.)

He also told us that "Kaylan doesn't want to go home to her parents. Would you like to talk to Kaylan?"

When we told him that, uh, yeah, as a matter of fact we would -- as would her family -- he said we'd probably just twist things around. When we asked him if she even had access to a phone, he said, "I don't know -- like I said, I've got a lot of employees that work there, and I don't know...who has a phone, who doesn't have a phone...Why would I know that? Do you know everybody...that you work with has a phone and don't have a phone....?"

But then he said, "Obviously, this person doesn't have a phone," and said that Kaylan never paid her phone bill, so her service was cut.

Then Davis laid it all out for our stupid ass: "She can call whoever she wants. See, to me, you sound retarded, and this is the reason why: Okay, you guys know what we do for a living, you know how we operate, and everything like this...and all's you're asking questions about is...things that you know doesn't happen and you're trying to make up a story. That's what you're doing...They can leave anytime they want. They knock on so many doors during the day, they can call home anytime they want."

You know. This is my dad. I grew in a great home. No my dad doesn't care what people think. He taught me something most parents won't. He taught me how to be real. Don't put up with other people's lies and fakness. I grew up in his house making straight A's and B's. He has given his kids every kid wishes they could have. He doesn't care about the crews home life. He's there to teach them that there is always hope. They have someone to look up to. It's up to them everyday to get up and do the best they can at their job. It's not his fault if they don't make their profit to pay their bills. He puts a roof over their head and teaches them to put food in their mouth. Even takes them out to eat most days. Teenagers will lie just to get out of trouble and out of a bad reputation. That's how this world is. Yeah, my dad makes a few mistakes. So does my step-mom. (Crystal) let me tell you this though. Any kid would be luck to have a man like him in their life or woman so nursing. Mr. Malisow, you go off what other people say. You go off words. That's not this world. The mind comes up with stupid things sometimes, but the heart shows everything. Actions speak louder than words. I don't see one sentance about my father, Kevin Davis, doing an action. I see words. I see a man hiding behind an article that uses words. A good reporter would use actions and words. You seem more like a lawer. You bash my dad for a teenager. You didn't even ask her when she got home, did you? Maybe you should understand my dads buisness before you try to understand him. I've known my dad my entire life. He saves most those kids off the street. Tries to help them get on their feet. I may not be the best daughter, but he's the best dad.

Thank you.

I worked for Kevin and Crystal Davis and she is his wife not his sister. I seen how the whole system works, he lives in Colorado Springs up on black forest road not Denver and yes there is a lot of Marijuana and booze. If your with his company long enough he will get you your medical card so your legal to smoke MJ in Colorado, also they go to sturgess bike rally and if your a MagVet then you get your leathers with the company logo on the back. He has Mag agents that live in his house like personal maids that he and the rest of the crews call House Bitches they cook, clean, take care of his children who are constantly exposed to the foul language drugs and alcohol. The best part is Kevin believes he is Untouchable like an old Mobster or something, He once said to the crew after beating Lonnie senseless an attempting to pull his tooth out with a pair of Cutlery scissors " These kids think they can run home and tell their parents I pulled a tooth out of their face or cut a pinky finger off their hand and then sue me, but I pay eight lawyers 800 dollars and hour so they'll never win just go broke trying." Now to be completely honest I never had my phone taken from me or was beat senseless but I followed the rules, Don't lie cheat or steal, not to say that what happened to those kids was right because it wasn't I'm just saying I did learn A LOT about my ability to talk to people and sell. All in all the company is doing some very shady operating people lying saying they can donate magazines to Troops overseas and such.

Kevin If your reading this just know eventually everyone meets their downfall and your not untouchable.

i used to work for that bastard and yeah all they do is smoke and drink all night and when we are out knocking on doors we are usually drunk then when you quit kevin personally beats the shit out of you and leaves you in some random town or at a bus station claiming that you have a bus ride home and then come to find out you dont so you have to find your own way home... oh and they take all your stuff so its nearly impossible to get ahold of anyone you may know... so if kevin your reading this fuck you!! and scott biddle your a miniature little fuck and i would beat your ass any day

I sold magazines for years. I am a 45 year old mother of two and have  Been married to the same man 20 years , whom i met when i was with the industry. It taught me so many things, most of all to never give up on yourself and to always stay positive. The business put my daughter through college, her first car, And a beautiful home in South Florida. I won trips, prizes, and made as much money as i was motivated to make. I was never brainwashed ( as people thought back then as well) held against my will or ever mistreated. There were bad Companies as well as good ones back then. If two dogs came up to you, and one of them pissed on your leg, are you going to kick them both? Stereo typing is bad for any industry.

I am 51 years old mother of 4 and live a nice life style in Michigan  I run & own my our Title company and all of this is due to the time I spent traveling with A Mag crew. I learned so much in those few years most of all the power of positive living which got me through stage 4 Cancer. I owe my live to my crew & Manager. There is NO brain washing and no inprisonment at all. If you have never been on a crew or known someone who was...do not make a judgement. All this bad talk is all dirty laundry to sell the public.

I am the Director of Operation:Safehome, An organization similar to and a partner of Phil Ellenbecker and the Dedicated Parents Memorial Group. I am the sole person responsible for tracking the missing girl, Kaylan Goodman, down to Fairmont City, IL. I also appeared via skype for an interview with Fox 26 Houston's John Donnelly in regards to the initial story. Since I made my involvement in this matter public, I have received several calls from people who claim to be connected to mr. davis and mr. biddle's crew threatening bodily harm towards me, my family and associates of my agency. These people whom have attempted to block their number on caller ID, but we were able to obtain the numbers and they have all been activated on a Real-time phone tracking site that uses GPS. We know exactly where these calls originally came from and we are recording the calls and Mr. Davis and Mr. Scott Biddle and all known associates are going to be in more hot water than they already are if they even think of attempting to act upon these threats. These people are so retarded that they even called a Police Officer a "Fat A**" and other threats so that right there is ground in itself for Assault on a LEO" which is a 5-Year Min. MANDATORY sentence in Prison.

I would like to response to the crazy stories on theinternet about me. My name is Kevin, I contacted by a member from the NationalField Selling Association about a missing girl. That night I called the girl’smanager on the phone, Scott Biddle. He informed me that the girl lost herphone. I told him she needed to call her parents and the Kingfisher PoliceDepartment.

About an hour later I receive a phone call stating Kaylanhad called home spoke to her parents, and was on the phone with the police, whenthey traced the phone she was talking on to her location. This was by theFairmont Police Department.

Seven hours later, I receive a phone call from Kaylanstating she doesn’t want to go home. She informed me that her “little” (fewerthan 18) sister is a media glory hound, she thinks this will get her famous. Shealso informed me that Mr. Biddle was locked and NO charges were filed againsthim. When I called down to the Police Station, spoke to the Detective on thecase. He told me he could hold him FOREVER without charging him. It’s called “HomelandSecurity”.

I then called Kaylan’s father. I asked him if he would buyher a ticket to go home, that I would make sure she was on the plane. The onlything I asked in return was for him to call off his “Boys in Blue”. He told methat he would make Mr. Biddle “surface”. He laughed at the fact he has “Hispals in Blue, having Mr. Biddle under the jail and nobody can find him”. Only ifI promised to never give his daughter a job again. (Amazing, this is America, backdoor deals with the POLICE?) I have all of this on tape. Kaylan was takento the airport, put on the 7:55pm Southwest flight to Hobby. She was received byher father and mother. He called me as soon as she landed.

That’s when Mr. Biddle was then allowed to make a phone callto tell someone his bail. They booked him under a false name he used to get outof trouble when he was 12. This was listed on their NCIC database. When theyran his fingerprints through the national data base, it came back as a AKA also.So they booked and charged him with “Giving False ID to the Police”.  Released him on $125. Ticket/Bond.

Since all the drama started, I’ve had Kaylan call me so manytimes. Begging to come back to work for my company. She lives in an area wherethere is no work for young people. Even for a hairdresser. She wants to travel. She has traveled with one of my crews and loved it. There wasn’t any drug orbooze. They just had a good time. After 27 calls I told her she could come backto work. She’s in travel right now, but if anyone would like to speak with her,she will be posting within the next 48 hours a way for you to contact her onthe phone.

Our company has had 43 complaints with the BBB. We processover 1,400 orders a week. In the eight years our company has cleared over627,200 orders. That’s less than 1%. Say what you want about us, we offerpeople jobs. Pay them a fair wage, and travel. I can’t help it they have funSELLING MAGAZINES!

The warrant out for my arrest is for less than 1 gram ofhash. This was found in one of my barns at my home. Thank you for taking thetime out of your day to read my response.

Perhaps individuals like yourself who obviously have nothing better to do than sit around and speculate on a blog, should take the time to actually learn about the different organizations within this industry. True, there are those out there who operate outside ethical laws, however there are many who have reputable companies that run legitimate operations. Furthermore, any person that works for any crew, is not now, nor have they ever been forced or coerced to do so. Anyone, media or otherwise, who chooses to write inflammatory articles about our industry without concrete proof of foul play, opens themselves up to suit for libel, slander, and defamation of character. You may want to keep your perceptions and opinions, for that is all they are, confined to people and groups with whom you have personal knowledge, and refrain from ranting about anything you have no evidence of.

Whoever is spreading misinformation regarding the magazine industry or chemical sales industry is engaging in defamatory behavior.  Before printing this story, did anyone involved in the publishing of it, attempt to interview people who used to make a living selling magazines?  Probably not!  What about those currently selling magazines?  Doubtful!  Here is the real deal: I do not care what industry one finds oneself in, one will always find some people who operate with less than ethical behavior.  Furthermore, I am a social psychologist, who formerly sold magazines nearly 25 years ago.  Not one time was I EVER told that I could not communicate with my family!  Second, with technology the way it exists today coupled with hotels literally having a computer in nearly every lobby along with social networking, the accusations seem literally implausible.  Let''s just call this what it is: An attack on an industry that the writer, editor, and publisher will never fully understand.  Many individuals leave home due to problems at home.  I am not saying this is the case, however, I KNOW for a fact this individual who was presumably missing in Oklahoma has contacted her family telling them that she has a new family now.  One must ask what would motivate an individual make such a harsh statement.  As the writer points out, it just HAS to be trafficking of others! How about writing a piece as to w/hat led people to leave their families in order to make a better way for themselves. A very one-sided article! Shame on you!

They do tell you what to do how to live what lifestyle you should live up to..to their standards. It its brain washing but, there are alot of people that get left with no money and no real way of getting home. Left at bus stops on their working section..such as a road their signed with strangers it its very dangerous for girls! But they influence the girls through the master of manipulation that they have acquired over the years and being a sales representative brainwashing people door to door convincing them that what they're doing is legit however some of those people end up keeping cash for the magazine subscriptions and the subscriptions do not get turned in. mainly because they do not pay their employees properly he will give them as much is 25 dollars a day to live on if you don't meet your quota they put you down call you names then build you back up again so you're going make their money! f*** mag crew and the brain washers that make you feel worthless

The danger in taking the time to rebut someone who traffics in falsehoods is that, to the outsider, it can add an aura of credibility to what is essentially horseshit. But it might be equally as dangerous not to address the sketchy party's ridiculous claims, lest some unknowing individual fall prey. It's sort of a damned-if-you-do/don't thing.

Upon speaking with a public information officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department, I was informed that one of the accusations against Kevin Davis -- which got their child protective services agency involved -- was that he gave marijuana-infused goodies to his teenage daughter and young children. That's the kind of fellow you want in charge of young adults, ain't it?

Just for background: Mr. Davis lives in a medical marijuana state. This means you can procure and smoke marijuana legally. Why on Earth anyone with that sort of unfettered access would want to flout the law is beyond me, but maybe there is a limit to just how much THC the human brain can withstand before complete erosion sets in.

Someone dropped a dime on Davis; officers found 32 pot plants, 98 grams of "refined" marijuana, and 2,365 grams of "infused edibles" at his house. His medical marijuana permit only allowed him to have up to 6 plants and two ounces. (Yes, you read that correctly -- this guy was legally allowed to have two freakin' ounces at home!).

He was charged with cultivation of marijuana (felony) and possession of marijuana (misdemeanor). He pled guilty and got unsupervised probation. But here's the thing: when the investigators went to his house to retrieve the illegal stash, they were given two black garbage bags full of seeds and stems. Another anonymous tipster told investigators that Davis merely relocated his operation.

But that's really the least of our concerns here. Anyone who has read our exhaustive 2008 story about mag crews, or read any of the other stories out there, know that this business is a playground for men who prey on the weak. Young women like Kaylan have it especially tough.

Complaints with the BBB are a red herring and non-issue. The danger here is not whether some "Jones" (which is what mag crews call customers) gets their Vogue subscription; the danger is whether the person at their door is the type of guy to rape an elderly woman before dousing her in lighter fluid and setting her aflame, or maybe just beat them to death. But because Davis clings fast to this ridiculous argument like a barnacle, I probably need to point out the obvious: not many people will take the time to complain to the BBB if they get screwed out of $20-$50.

It would be interesting to see what Davis' idea of a "fair wage" is, too, as newbies like Kaylan don't even get to hold onto their money. The crew leaders are in charge of everything, and it's not like the kids on the crew are getting W2s. (Moreover, the crews never have the proper peddling licenses, so every kid on the crew is in jeopardy of being arrested every time they knock on the door.)

The bottom line is: there is an overwhelming amount of research, evidence and testimony to shred the limp line of malarkey guys like Davis and Biddle peddle to kids who don't know any better. In addition to all the news stories, there is the tireless advocacy work of people like Phil Ellenbecker (www.travelingsalescrews.info) and Earlene Williams (parentwatch.org) who are constantly on the phone with parents trying to get their kids back.

Davis is simply not credible.

Thanks,Craig Malisow

You have heard of the first amendment, right? There's no slander or libel when there are documented cases against companies in this industry.

Seriously, you guys that run these companies should stop coming on here and posting. I worked in a similar situation during college. There is no guaranteed pay, so the managers pulling people from their steady jobs are only endangering them. Don't tell me you wouldn't mind your daughter joining one of these crews and travelling the country. That, sir, would be incorrect.

"A very one-sided article! Shame on you!"

Really?  Have you ever watched the news or read a paper or online article before yesterday? For a social psychologist, you're kind of naive.  It's sort of disconcerting you may be out there advising and counseling people with no real working knowledge of the "social" environment we live in that you went to school to study for too many years.

Hi, anonymous person who doesn't back up their vague arguments with evidence, thanks for taking the time to comment.

I implore you to check out the in-depth 2008 piece on the industry that's linked in the blog piece. As someone who's covered the industry for several years now, I can safely -- and maturely, mind you -- say that you are full of baloney. Moreover, I would expect that a so-called social psychologist, of all professionals, would be able to grasp the complex social forces at play among the kids who join the crews.

I highly doubt that a social psychologist would make such a childlike, solipsistic contention that, since you were not mistreated when you were on crew, there is no evidence that anyone else is. And did you really have a straight face when you wrote "...telling them she has a new family now. One must ask what would motivate an individual make such a harsh statement [sic]"?

Yes, what would motivate an individual -- in this case, an 18-year-old girl -- to make such a statement? As a social psychologist, I would think you'd realize the gigantic red flags "new family now" raises.

There is a staggering amount of evidence showing that this industry is deliberately designed to be rotten from the top down. You are simply not credible.

Thanks,Craig

I am a former agent from a lifetime ago.  I have to say that with a few notable exceptions, I had the time of my life traveling on a mag crew.  I do not now, and will never, regret those years.  That said, I am the first to acknowledge that there were then, and continue to be, problems in this industry that need to be addressed.   I am now an attorney, and have represented various magazine-related companies and individuals over the years.  I know from my current association with the industry that are a lot of good companies out there that do things right, but unfortunately there remain a number of bad companies that do not.    I also know that the door-to-door magazine sales industry is often unfairly targeted.  For example, the 2008 article that you referenced above talks about the two magazine agents who "were arrested in Albuquerque after they allegedly forced their way into the home of an elderly couple and beat them to death, raping the wife first."  They agents were in jail when the 2008 article was published.  I do not see where you ever reported, and you may not know, "the rest of the story."  The City of Albuquerque took a hard stand against magazine crews following the horrific murder of Tak and Pung Yi, including pursuing capital murder charges agains the agents, Michael Lee and Travis Rowley, and suing the agents' magazine sales company and the related clearinghouse within days of the murders.  I represented the magazine sales company and clearinghouse in the state and federal litigation.  Through the course of those cases, I learned that the City was holding DNA results from the murders for more than six months, which DNA results showed that a serial killer who was then in jail for another murder was also responsible for the murder of the Yis.  In fact, the serial killer had confessed to the murders shortly after the DNA results came back.  Notwithstanding, in order to save face, the City tried to hide the DNA results and the serial killer's confession, tried to get the serial killer to implicate the magazine agents, and continued to pursue capital murder charges against the magazine agents.  The agents were finally released from jail in 2009 more than 15 months after the murders, almost a year after the City learned that a serial killer had murdered the Yis, and eight months after the serial killer had confessed to the murders.  The story is more detailed and much, much worse than is even outlined here, but you get the idea.  The City has already settled a lawsuit with one of the magazine agents for $950,000.  http://www.abqjournal.com/main/2011/06/22/news/albuquerque-to-pay-950k-in-yi-murders.html    Your readers should not presume that all police departments and prosecutors are bad based upon the actions of the City of Albuquerque are set forth above - or based upon the abundance of similar stories about the same police department and prosecutors ignoring evidence while pursuing murder and other felony criminal convictions.  Nor should your readers presume that all magazine crews are bad based upon the actions of a few.   Without taking a position one way or the other about Kevin Davis, I will say that I throughly enjoyed reading your article and comments above.   Cynthia

Well, I find your comment interesting.  First, I have watched the posts from an investigator covering the case.  I should make clear however, he posts that she went back on the road after her return to home. Interestingly enough, the girl was supposedly upset due to her sister trying to get into acting and being a supposed drama queen.  It is interesting what can occur when one actually researches a topic instead of simply speculating.

I thought I had linked to it, but apparently not. As I wrote, there's a warrant out for his arrest. Crime Stoppers included him here: http://www.crimestop.net/home....  So you might want to consider sharing your info with them.

But no, that's of course not the only thing you can do. I'm always interested in the internal operations of these businesses, so whatever info you can share with me, that'd be extremely helpful for future stories. You can reach me at craig.malisow@houstonpress.com or 713.280.2481. Thanks

You know, the author, Craig Mallislow, has replied to posts in this blog. If you find my comments interesting, you're certainly not retorting his, at all. It is interesting that someone such as yourself would come on this blog and defend the behavior perpetrated by Biddle, a felon. Go ahead and send your daughter to work for him if it's such an upstanding business.
