Gets 30-day suspension for parking-lot shooting.
A Houston cop who shot to death a patron while off-duty at a River Oaks bar has been suspended for 30 days after an Internal Affairs investigation, HPD says.

HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva tells Hair Balls that Jose Coronado is currently serving the suspension, which was handed down recently.

Coronado, a six-year vet, killed Omar Ventura in the parking lot of Sherlock's Pub in the 1900 block of West Gray about 2:20 a.m. February 19 of last year.

He had gotten into an altercation with Ventura. Some witnesses claim Coronado seemed drunk; HPD later said he was tested and passed, although critics said the test wasn't taken until hours after the incident.

(Further info on the reasons from the suspension must come from the City of Houston; we have a call in to them and will update if there's more.)

Ventura's widow, Rosa Rodriguez, and her three minor children have filed suit against Coronado, the city and the owner of the bar, claiming the officer was intoxicated and that Ventura had been trying to protect a female bar patron from an assault when Coronado intervened.

The suit paints a vivid, if naturally one-sided, version of events surrounding the shooting of Ventura and his brother Rolando, who was injured:

The woman accompanying Officer Coronado from the bar begged him to put away his gun and go home. He, having had numerous drinks, was either oblivious to her pleas or ignored her purposefully. Omar and Rolando began to back away. Officer Coronado, presumably realizing he would miss an opportunity to shoot someone, fired at Omar hitting him in the stomach at almost point blank range. Rolando, seeing his brother shot and fall to the ground, experienced shock and remained standing in place. Officer Coronado then tried to shoot Rolando in the face twice.

Appears to be another case of a trigger happy Houston Police assassin, who obviously gets away with murder due to the biased courts of "law" here in the 'Petro-Metro"!

Angel, have YOU spoken with the police, since you "SAW everything"? And you actually STAYED AROUND to watch the shootings and everything? You're hardcore.

Angel, where do you get your information?  Why isn't that story being reported?  If in fact he thought that a person was about to be killed by being beaten to death he had every right to pull the trigger.  As would any citizen.

CALL HUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT NOW AND ASK WHY THIS MAN WASN'T ARRESTED LIKE (ANYONE) ELSE WOULD BE. WTF! So let me get this straight..... having a little badge now means that you can do ANYTHING you want include flat out MURDER other human beings and aren't even arrested like anyone else????//!!! He should be IN JAIL AWAITING TRIAL ON MURDER CHARGES, not on suspension. wtf. seriously wtf. This is DISGUSTING!

I don't get it. If he acted in self-defense, why give him any punishment? If he didn't, why isn't he facing a murder charge? Is the suspension related to being drunk or fighting or what?

Seems sketchy.

Yeah, it's great having this drunk cop walking around killing people and a whole 30 days suspension. That's pretty stiff punishment, I'm surprised that HPD didn't give him a bigger gun and more alcohol, maybe turn him loose in the 3rd or 4th ward.

I was there, saw everything and was just a few feet from it all.

Yeah Angel, where DO you get your information. Now lets see if Hair Ball is going to let me post this time???

Is that a threat?

True, he was not actually tested for alcohol until 8-9 in the morning.

You don't get it.... let me EXPLAIN it to you..... we are living in an extreamly corrupt system, many of the cops running around the streets are the REAL CRIMINALS, you are brainwashed by television. cops these days act more like criminals then the so called criminals FOR REAL THOUGHT and get away with it all the time. He wasn't acting in self defense, he murdered one person, attempted to murder a second and then went home on a suspension instead of being ARRESTING like ANY OTHER person would be. Now do you understand?

Is that suspension WITH or WITHOUT pay?

how could you possibly consider words in a blog as a genuine threat?

First off, my condolences to the wife and the children, however, why is it that they don't talk about how the brothers and their friends had Jose's friend on the ground getting horribly beaten, that's the only reason Jose ran to his aid...why? bc he's a police officer and a damn good one. Jose made it known by pulling his badge out and verbally saying multiple times that he was a police officer. However, that obviously didn't matter when Omar and his brother proceeded to attack Jose as well and Omar continued to say he didn't give a fuk who Jose was or that he was a cop. So it's a double standard, what would anyone do in a situation where you're a cop and about to be attacked?

when someone says, "don't worry about it it's taken care of", yea that's a threat...

woefatcat

"It's taken care of" could be a turn of a phrase like "it's in the cards" or  "Karma is a bitch!" By the way, where did you get all your information?

You would be amazed on how things can be used in court...you entered your email address correct? you posted from an I.P. address correct?? When someone says, "someone will kill him on the street. dont worry about it, its taken care of...... " then I do believe that is a threat.

whatthehell?

Are you the person that was getting beaten on the ground for punching the girl? Since you were there, can you tell me whether or not the person that punched the chick got arrested? Also, was the person who punched the girl a friend of the police officer? That seems like pertinent information. Also, are cops supposed to shoot unarmed threats in the face at point blank range?

Doctor Arsenic

So the cop's drunk friend was getting beaten for harrasing women, and the cop, not fearing for his life, shoots one dead and shoots at the other out of drunken retaliation.  Pretty clear to me.  If you start with the fact that most cops are scum, it's easy to figure out.

No, ur incorrect, he's not a hero, however, he did his job whether in uniform or not, whether it was his friend or not, he still went to someone's aid. It's still a double standard. He's out of uniform and he goes to someone's aid and then something tragic happens bc the other person IS drunk and "doesn't give a fuk" so what if he as a police officer didn't do anything and walked away, then he's wrong as well bc he's a police officer? That night he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. There was a whole other brawl going on besides what happened with Coronado. And why did he get a suspension bc it's HPD's decision/procedure, bc the grand jury no billed the case.

Glenn Weyant
Glenn Weyant

Alright the cops a hero, but if he did the right thing why on earth would the department give him a suspension??? Maybe because he was drunk...hummm. Nope, the department checked him for alcohol and he passed, right. Yeah but, if the department checked him lets say 6 hours later or course he's going to pass a breathalyser, I mean come on doesn't the department know we know that, yeah they know but they believe they can get the BS pass the ordinary people, you know the ones, the ones that still believe the police don't lie, the police are honest, the police don't get drunk at 2:am in the morning. So, always remember children, it's okay for damn good cops to get drunk in the middle of the night, get into fights and shot people. And go to: www.injusticeeverywhere.com if you don't believe me, you'll see.
