Beware: Magazine Scammers in Houston

They're baaaack....
A roving band of scamming douchebags calling themselves Nxcess Sales have parked themselves in Houston; these bottom-feeders have been making their way across the country, telling people they're selling magazines to raise funds for, among other things, local children's hospitals. This particular crew, which is incorporated in Phoenix and also operates the name Dynasty Sales, was recently sued by Seattle Children's Hospital for just that.

For those of you unfamiliar with the crime masquerading as door-to-door magazine sales, it goes beyond just ripping people off; it's a trade plagued by murders, rapes, assaults, kidnappings, and setting people on fire.

In case you want to place an order in person, they're staying at the Venetian Inn near Greenspoint Mall; feel free to call and ask to be connected to anyone with the magazine crew, in case you want to find out about their subscription offers and/or criminal background.

Besides the children's-hospital spiel, they tell potential customers (which they call "Joneses") that they attend a local high school and that they're raising money for a school sports team, orchestra, or a trip abroad (usually London). If for some reason you aren't compelled to slam the door in their faces, go ahead and ask to see their solicitors' licenses, or, better yet, get as much as information -- and paperwork -- as you can from them, and send it our way, because we like to keep tabs on these folks.

They came to my house just now in Sugar Land Sweetwater area (9/15/2012).  Unfortunately, I fell for "neighbor's stepson" trick and wrote a check...   I made a stop on the check and called the cops.

We had a girl come to our home this week with same scam. After she left we looked up United Circulation LLC and the page was filled with the words scam / fraud. We were able to get a name / her picture  and her license plate number. After some search on the internet / facebook we found out she and her boyfriend are living in the tomball area right now. The police have the information. I would like to think they will do something about them but not real confident that will really happen. What really made me mad was she used the Wounded Warriors Project as the name of the organization that would receive these magazines!! To use our servicemen ad women in this way infuriates me!!

Two individuals, female (5'5"/white/blonde/ponytail) and male (5'10"/white/blond/buzz haircut), were making the rounds in the Galleria area.  After weathering the initial 20s barrage of compliments, I cut to the chase and asked what they were selling and probed their story.  They cracked and became hostile.  I asked for ID and they started walking away.

After running inside to grab my phone, I scooted down to the first floor and found them HIDING behind an electrical closet.  This freaked me out...

Took a picture of them and called the cops as I corralled them out of the apartment complex.

They hit my mother in law up last week in Victoria.  They are using the name United Circulation  LLC now.

They were in Meyerland tonight.  Raising money for the Children's Museum.  We shut the door.  Unfortunately our neighbor wrote them a check.

One of them just came to my door about 5 minutes ago. They're in El Lago(Clear Lake) now, and they want you to donate a book that will help their "point system" so they can recieve a free trip anywhere in the world, and it somehow helps their career path. This guy told me he wanted to be a fireman/millionaire and own/rent houses which will put him well on his way to becomming a billionaire before he is 30. El Lago is full of retired NASA employees, and many of them no longer have the mental capacity of a "rocket scientist". Can the local police do anything about this scam?

Yep.  They came through my area (Spring/Tomball/Woodlands) earlier this week...oh yeah, this time they were all UofH students in the media/broadcasting fields.  My wife, being a UofH student started asking questions that obviously made them uncomfortable.  We laughed, they left.
