UPDATED: Music Editor Chris Gray Is Holding His Own

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon, Chris Gray's dad said his son has his eyes open, is responsive to sounds and has moved around. It is still too early to determine what all has happened to him, however, because doctors still can't tell how much the lingering effects of the heavy medication he received while he was in an induced coma are affecting Chris. The family is taking turns sitting with Chris while he's in the hospital. Doctors are continuing to wean Chris off the machines, his dad said, and hope to finish that in the next day or so.

Further update: Chris's mom says he's off the respirator! And his CAT scan came back normal. "He's still pretty goofy" from all the sedation, she said, but his doctors think he'll make a 100 percent recovery from the heart attack. Biggest news: Chris will have to quit smoking and his mom asked us to "spread the word: No one should send Chris cigarettes!"

As many of you know, Houston Press Music Editor Chris Gray suffered an apparent heart attack Friday morning and since then has been hospitalized.

His father said this morning that they really appreciate all the concern everyone has shown for his 36-year-old son. He said doctors have said it will probably be Monday before they can fully assess Chris's condition.

Our readers are encouraged to post a best-wishes comment here. We'll make sure Chris gets all of them once he's up and around and back heading up our music coverage.

And at this point, the Houston Press would like to thank the passerby who gave Chris CPR, the ambulance personnel and the medical staff for all they're doing to bring him back to good health.

Please join us in keeping Chris Gray in your thoughts and prayers.

We wrote at The Daily Texas together many moons ago. I was sorry to see the news in The Austin Chronicle, but relieved to see you are going to be okay. Check out "The Easy Way To Quit Smoking" online when you get out of the hospital. That's how I quit after 20 plus years. It works. Get well soon!

From one Chris to another, I hope you mend up soon. My time in the hospital from a cycling wreck was a wake up call that reminded me what a gift every day is, and it made me change some priorities that made my life a lot better. Hopefully this can be your silver lining from this experience. Get back out there soon!

Man what a damn shame, saw the headline earlier and immediately hoped it was not someone from The Press and sure enough it was. Hopefully all of our thoughts and prayers reach Gray and help him make a full recovery in a quick and timely manner. Looking at the comments it's good to see so much well wishing, and good to see that he is holding his own in the hospital.

Our thanks to the many expressions of care and concern from the Houston Press family, especially Margaret Downing,  Chris's cardiac doctor told us this morning that his prognosisfor recovery from the heart attack looks very good.  There is a question of neurologicalcomplications from lack of oxygen--we don't know if or how long Chris was without oxygen.  Hopefully, we will have good news Monday!  Please continue to send your prayers and goodthoughts Chris's way. With much gratitude,Chris's mom, dad, and brother

So glad to hear you are recovering Chris! The entire Austin music scene is sending you good vibrations right now! Take care...and know that you've got much love coming to you right now from strangers, acquaintances and friends alike!

If you don't have medical insurance thru the Houston Press (or even if you do), please let your Austin peeps know if we can help with doing/organizing some benefit shows to raise money for your medical expenses. Your family and loved ones can feel free to reach out to me to discuss further at my day gig at the Texas Music Office.

Stay strong,Marc
