This Year's Banned Books of Texas

Don't read that, kids.
The ACLU of Texas has released their annual report on books banned by the state's school districts.

Among the usual suspects this time around: R.L. Stine, a Gossip Girl novel and the ever-popular gay penguins tale And Tango Makes Three.

Another highlight: An elementary in a San Antonio-area district put Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary in a restricted area because of "sexual content or nudity."

"Censorship of Young Adult books is concerning because these books motivate youth to read, improve literacy levels and drive interest in literature. They are also very relevant to youth, assisting them to make sense of the world and helping them to form their own ideas and values to prepare for the future," said Dotty Griffith of the ACLU of Texas. "The ACLU of Texas absolutely respects parents' right to choose what books their children read and to work with teachers to find alternate titles when parents have concerns. But efforts by a single parent or small group to ban a book and keep all students from reading it infringes on the rights of other parents to make their own choices. That is the effect of banning books."

I'm surprised they haven't disallowed "Keeley Thomson: Demon Girl" by K.L. Byron. It pretty much is an attack piece on Christianity along with most of the things that get books banned, like strong sexual theme.

It's being passed around online though, by kids, so I doubt that it will be stopped easily.

Spanking Shakespeare is by Jake Wizner, the Gossip Girl series is Cecily Von Ziegesar, and Far from Xanadu is Julie Anne Peters... but otherwise, nice copyediting.

Hymnals are books with collections of musical hymns that can typically be found in churches. Prayerbooks or missals are books that contain written prayers and are commonly carried by monks, nuns, and other devoted followers or clergy.

They banned a book from the Goosebumps guy? What is wrong with people?

I don't believe in banning books. Period. However, if you tell a kid they *can't* do something, the odds of them wanting to do it go up. So go ahead, ban some books. All you're doing is turning them into forbidden fruit and therefore making them more desirable to your kids. These books will be read, with or without your permission.

That book, Keeley Thomson: Demon Girl, isn't even out until next month. That people are attacking it based mainly on religious views, when they can't have read it is horrifying.

Yes, children these days are getting their kicks through romance novels. Good thing there isn't any other way for kids to get their hands on something more hardcore. I hope such a worldwide distribution of pornography is never developed.

I actually agree with banning the Gossip Girl novel. Although I'd extend the ban to burning crap like that en masse along with the Danielle Steele-esque novels of the world...  ;)
