Friendswood Police Chief Robert Wieners's E-Mail Troubles

E-mail problems
The online hackers/pranksters/terrorists Anonymous have taken on Texas police chiefs, breaking into a central e-mail and releasing a ginormous dump of private correspondence.

Sadly, you probably will not be shocked to learn that Texas police chiefs often receive or forward chain-mail jokes and dubious political commentary about Muslims and minorities.

And then there's Friendswood police chief Robert Wieners, who produced this classic:

That stupid bitch who started that stolen car chase at Yale and 610 got what she deserved (I'll bet she was fat and black too). Same with that pervert that got shot by the county. Fuck that guy, see ya. That all sounds like good police work to me. Those folks got the criminal cure. It's guaranteed, they will never commit a crime again.

To protect and serve!!

We called Wieners's office and were placed on what sounds like a long list of requests for comment. We've also asked Mayor David Smith for comment.

Anyway, the collection of e-mails is huge, and most of it is tedious, quotidian stuff. But have at it if you like.

Update: Nick Haby, assistant to the Friendswood city manager, tells Hair Balls Wieners did not write any of the controversial e-mails.

"They were sent to him, I don't know if they were found in his inbox or in the trash, but he did not write them," he says.

Haby says he does not know if Wieners is the person who responded, "How do you really feel:)" to the "stupid bitch e-mail.

The city will cooperate with the investigation into the statewide hacking. "Quite frankly, the chief is a victim of a crime here," he says.

Police are scum, death to them.

So much to holding police officers to a higher standard. Nothing will happen and his remarks will be applauded for their non-political correctness.

Chief Wieners, an ex-Marine, is an honorable man and the consummate professional law enforcer.  Those of you who are badmouthing him are nothing more than a bunch of dipshit assholes!

Haby needs to get his story straight. It's true that the e-mails are all inbound e-mails rather than sent e-mails, but those e-mails sometimes contain threaded replies, which means we sometimes get to see what Weiners wrote.

Having lived in Friendswood for several years, none of this surprises me.Friendswood portrays themselves as something of a "Stepford Wife" community, and anything outside the realm of church and republicanism is deemed as hellfire.

These, (as in happens often enough to be plural) stories are what I think of when challenged for my jaundiced eye on our "policing" organizations.

Maybe we need the criminal cure.

I've lived in Friendswood for the past 12 years and I know Chief Weiners.  This is not his style.

You, on the other hand, sound totally as though you might be one of the hackers in questions.

What is Mr. Weiners' style, exactly?   You're not much more forthcoming than the good chief, who won't answer for himself.  And what about Chris' comment-- all five lines and two sentences of it-- leads you to imply he's one of the hackers?

I dunno, Mr. Taylor, maybe I'm missing something here. I've read the article twice and I see a very pointed, very racist, and very irresponsible email that is attributed to Mr. Weiners. He hasn't responded to media request for statements or defended or denied the allegations. While I'm not inclined to jump to assumption, I am forced to seriously question the degree of his commitment to some people's rights.

Knowing what I do about "established and documented police procedures," your assertion to his adherence doesn't inspire confidence. Nor does negative comparisons. The HPD police chief hasn't been implicated this fiasco, while comparison to the former Harris County DA does bear comparison as the circumstances are very similar and just as unsettling.

Ultimately, Mr. Weiners' opinion, (alleged or otherwise) is his own business. Until, his very poor judgment impacts the performance of his duties. Again, I have doubts to his character, his judgment, and his ability to execute the duties he's charged with.

Kingwood takes first place in that category.

Mark, having lived in the area for pretty much my entire life save for that 1 year in Alvin, *shudder to think, I think I pretty much nailed the attitude of the Friendswood community. From what I understand, next to Clear Lake HS, Friendswood kids always had the best drugs! That's because they can afford it...

Chief Weiner's style, BTW, is one in which he goes out of his way to ensure that no one's rights are abridged, and that established  & documented police procudures are scrupulously followed.  In other words, the antithesis of your standard Houston police chief.

His all-encompassing judgement of the entire city of Friendswood, of which, IMHO, he knows nothing, but resents nonetheless.

This is inappropriate and irresponsible. You can disagree with someone without risking their (or someone else's) safety. Read up on civility or leave the comment boards alone until your older, 14 or 15, at least.
