That's a Whole Lotta Weed, Son: 1,700 Pounds of Marijuana Seized in Fort Bend County

"Mike" from the K-9 unit looking awfully smug...or stoned.
So, there you are, rolling down the highway in your tractor trailer filled with weed one minute, just minding your own business, and the next minute, you are busted by a drug-sniffing dog. Mama said there'd be days like this.

Apparently, Amado Bazan III, 39, of Mission, Texas, was the driver in question making his way north on U.S. 59 near Rosenberg where officers from the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force were participating in the Houston High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area initiative. Talk about dumb luck.

The truck was stopped and a member of the K-9 unit (pictured above) sniffed out the ganja. Bazan was charged with possession of marijuana (ya think?), a second degree felony.

The total amount of herb weighed 1,726 pounds and is valued at $900,000. That is one enormous joint...or a whole bunch of little ones.

Here's something to cheer up all the stoners who are no doubt mourning the loss:

$900,000 for 1,700 pounds? Meh, that's some shwag right there. Not even a full ton - I bet that barely made a dent in the traffickers' annual business.

Bummer, to bad the cops dont have any REAL crime to deal with. Looks like they will be selling pot out of the trunk of their patrol cars for a while lol.

Hemp is worth $900 thousand a ton? When I was working in Central Asia, where the hemp plant is native, there were plants growing in vacant lots in the middle of cities and nobody, but nobody, ever bothered to touch the stuff. Is there in lesson in there somewhere for us?

Yes, the Fort Bend County task force.  I happen to have a audio recording of a so-called impromptu stop outside of Rosenberg in the remote past.  The trooper was stalling while waiting on a K9 unit from Houston.   Reportedly, the trooper noticed a blue weld line along the bottom of the trailer.  There was a false bottom.  After the arrest, I clipped the article out of the Houston newspaper.

The bottom line is "legalize."

The war on weed is costing us million, billions, causing a leap in drug-related crime, and not having any effect. The smarter way is to legalize. Grow. Regulate. Tax. And propagandize against using.

No, I don't think there is.

Actually, it grows wild in the U.S. too.  The lesson is that some stoners are easily parted from their money.

The HC Sheriff's Department is very happy to take all that state and federal grant money to fight the 'war on drugs'. It keeps half the force in jobs and pays for the Harris County jail. Not to mention how many attornies here make a very good living from petty drug possession cases.
