CNN Won't Answer Questions About Its Child-Sex Trafficking Crusade

CNN reporter Amber Lyon has made a crusade out of trumpeting the "fact" that "100,000 to 300,000" children are enslaved into sex trafficking each year.

As our sister paper the Village Voice pointed out, in a piece we ran in the print edition, those numbers are almost certainly a gross exaggeration. While the problem of child-sex trafficking exists in the U.S., it is nowhere near the level trumpeted by some groups who might have financial or religious motives for making everyone think so.

Voice editor Tony Ortega addresses the issue of CNN's coverage, including its take on Backpages.com, a Village Voice Media ad site that some have charged aids in the trafficking. CNN didn't want to hear about the extensive and expensive safety measures put in place to prevent such ads, Ortega says, and Lyon -- who has bragged about ambushing Craigslist founder Craig Newmark -- refuses to answer any questions from the Voice.

Read it all here, in "CNN's Amber Lyon Ambushed Craigslist -- But She Won't Talk to The Village Voice."

Seriously the sheeple will believe anything that is on TV.  I have been in the escort industry for 10 + years and rarely have I come across an underage gal who is being forced or pimped in some way.  I have been into some of these brothels here in Houston, and it is not what the media is trying to make it out to be.  Wake up folks, if you want to stop trafficking in the sex industry you need to change the laws and legalize prostitution.  Another thing I might add, is that I watched a MSNBC program the other day about how law enforcement is more able to find runaway teens who are advertised on venues such as backpage.  They match up the teens picture with the ad.  Then they are able to find them.  If you take away things like Backpage and Craigslist for advertising adult entertainment all you do is force it further underground, and make even more harder for LE to find some of these underaged kids.

Statistics focusing on Commercial Sexual Exploitation have been used by organizations fighting against this abuse for well over 150 years.

In 1834, the New York Moral Reform Society stated emphatically that in America “there were as many as 12,000 brothels, 75,000 to 120,000 ‘harlots,’ 500,000 licentious wicked men, and 50 shops selling ‘evil books, pictures, and the paraphernalia of destruction,'" and that "20,000 women died each year “'as a result of prostitution.'”

Historian Patricia Cohen concludes, “their figures were estimates, and there was no way the reader could evaluate them. But that was less important than the shock value of such large numbers.”

Samuel McClure began a campaign against prostitution and trafficking in 1907 when his magazine declared, “The gross revenues from this business in Chicago were $20,000,000 – and probably more." No evidence for these numbers was offered. None was needed. Americans were shocked and demanded action. The Feds quickly enacted The Mann Act, a law so massively flawed that the crime of trafficking continues to grow unabated over 100 years later.

Victims deserve to finally have this truth exposed. It will be difficult to quantify (as are other current issues like climate change) and the numbers will always cause controversy (again, climate change). However, we must never take our eyes off the victims.
