KTRH All But Says Goodbye to News, Welcomes More Right-Wing Blather

The Houston Chronicle's David Barron just reported that longtime KTRH news anchors J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes are leaving the station in favor of new hosts Mike Matt Patrick and Lois Melkonian.

In case you need an introduction to Patrick, check out the above video where he personifies the term "Rush wanna-be" in a piece about Texas needing to "show some backbone" to the ACLU over making schoolkids stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

(On the other hand, the Denver Post, in its story on Melkonian's farewell, said she and her co-host "delivered to Denver an even-keeled, jokey talk show. He of the dry wit, she of the easy laugh.")

KTRH, once a powerhouse of a radio news station, has been steadily abandoning that role, cutting reporters and air time in favor of right-wing blather.

Program director Bryan Erickson issued a statement saying things are great:

This is an exciting time for our station. Like other forms of media, we have to continue to adapt. We have to serve our listeners by being informative and entertaining. Lana & JP are an institution in Houston, they are true professionals, and we, along with our listeners, will miss hearing their comforting voices every morning. We know our new show has big shoes to fill.

And it looks like Patrick's the guy to fill them! In case you doubt it, consider this trenchant piece of commentary for a South Bend radio station, wherein he says a Michigan State coach's heart attack had spiritual roots because he had just beaten Notre Dame on a trick play:

Update: The official Clear Channel announcement:

The move will reflect a new direction for the morning news, combining the informative news coverage KTRH listeners have grown accustomed to along with Patrick's keen insight and commentary. Critical information and timely updates on traffic and weather will still be staples of the new show. The station lineup will remain the same after the morning show, with talk show hosts Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Berry, and Mark Levin, followed by the overnight Coast to Coast. KTRH will continue to serve as the flagship of the Houston Astros.

Check the ratings - KTRH numbers at highest level in years while KROI remains irrelevant .

Bryan Erickson, KTRH News Director had an affair with my wife.  Sadly, he also is married and has 2 children.  Pretty slimy character,  Spread the word.

Nice..abouttime too...I mean this is Texas for crying out loud! all you liberals and liberal immigrantsget the hell out of Texas! Especially for a kid who doesn’t want to stand forthe Pledge of Allegiance and his mom says it’s okay?? Fine, Then kick thereasses out and sent them to Mexico or Europe, if they don't like how we dothings here. And all these Liberal news papers and journals need to get outtoo (IN HOUSTON)..this isn't main stream media nor is this a place for them. And QUIT Comingto Texas just to leach off of our good economy and job growth, if yourunwilling to get on the same track as Texas and what we believe.

P.S!. TheLiberals control the News Stations and Conservatives control the radio! So thisall makes sense

What a travesty to lose these two fine radio personalities.  And in return, we get a right wing, redneck, homophobic, xenophobic big-mouthed moron.  Like there isn't enough of those out there already.  God help us.

Hey Richard Connelly, is that what left wing loons call their brand of blather? News? Give it a rest. Looks like KTRH woke up and realized left wing propaganda isn't as highly valued as "right-wing blather."

Jp and Lana leaving 740 is like the stern of the Titanic slipping under the waves for true journalism on Houston radio. The ship has been sinking for a long time but now, it's gone. RIP Non-partisan news radio. I used to know ya. I used to love ya.

Who do you want communicating information to you in an emergency? An infotainer of "Fox and Friends" quality (i.e., Steve "Doofus") or two highly professional news readers like J.P. and Lana?

Looks like I will have to get my drive to work news elsewhere.

What a stupid story... "good old days are gone." The same people bitched when we traded Horses for cars. Move forward.

Besides... 30 years! Let them retire and enjoy their lives. I personally wish them all the best and thank them for their hard work.

Life is about change.

well, at least we can still count on Milo and Dave Raymond to give us up-to-date scores and play-by-play during the Astros' games...uh, nevermind.

Wow, GWEST, what an incredibly thoughtful and insightful remark. Is Richard Connelly, like, your girlfriend?

Mike Patrick, Matt Patrick.  Who cares what the new KTRH morning anchor's name is. Good thing that we don't have to depend on the Houston Press' Richard Connelly for anything so mundane as ACCURACY.

JP and Lana are fantastic, sorry to see them go.  Blather, I don't think so!

The people who complain the loudest about "bias" in the news, now offer the most biased "reporting."  It never ceases to amaze me how much people need to hear their own worldview reaffirmed, right or left.

We are the largest metro without a 24 hr news/weather/traffic station. It's disgusting that we have more sports radio stations than anyone else but no news station.

I remember when KTRH was a good source of basic, solid, no-frills news. I guess that is too boring for most people. Everyone needs to be entertained. Sigh.

To Don Moore, less news is more beguiling: he's doesn't have to think before selling widgets down at the market. And returning home to drinks, before kissing Betsy goodnight.

Not if change is a bunch of garbage to fill your head and influence your vote. The crap this station is turning out is regressive, back toward the direction of the horses you mention, not progressive.

yeah, Hill, I would say those most in need of having their opinions echoed in Houston would be decidedly on the Right...but good try at evenhandedness.

Thinking is too hard for most people. It's much easier to just listen to what you already like.
