Comment of the Day: The Most Even-Handed Comment Ever

We have some great commenters here on Hair Balls, and it's time we paid some damn attention to them.

So we'll be highlighting a Comment of the Day each morning, from the previous day's work. Maybe two comments, even.

This will all be determined by a highly rigorous scientific formula involving wit, clarity and whatever else we feel like at the moment.

We wrote about protesters at City Hall voicing complaints over the new historic preservation ordinance, which led one reader to muse, extremely even-handedly. Almost zen-like.

Tandcw wrote:

In my mental youth, I always assumed that those protesting for Historic Preservation were near holy and undoubtedly correct in their views. After reading some, the situation is more nuanced than that. Preservation often has some downsides.....anyone?

I think we should just take all the money spent on preserving buildings now and divert it to create a time machine so we can go back and prevent the shamrock hotel from being torn down.

A lot of preserved old buildings are just ugly old buildings.  And the preservationists always want others to pay for their hobby, if only indirectly through tax-exempt corporations that preserve and own the things.  Most want direct tax subsidy.  All, every one, want to enforce their aesthetics on the rest of us by using the force of law to keep old, economically worthless buildings in place.  They act like old warehouses rank with the Parthenon.

This is downright Clintonesque.

There are compelling arguments on both sides regarding the white line down the middle of the road.

It is my hope that the two sides can work together to further their mutual interests. Unless they do not wish to work together to further their mutual interests, which is a path that also potentially holds merit.
