85 MPH on Texas Highways: Why the Hell Not? (Five Houston-Area Spots That Should Be Considered)

The Dallas Morning News (behind a paywall but AP report is here) noted a small clause in a transportation bill passed by the House in Austin this week -- if approved by the Senate, it allows speed limits to be raised on some Texas highways to 85 mph, the highest in the country.

And we say why the hell not?

Sure, there are stretches of interstate in West Texas where going 85 mph feels more like 30 mph because things are so vast and empty and the road is straight and goes on forever.

But we think some Houston locations should also qualify.

1. Allen Parkway
Curves, hills (or what Houston calls hills) -- it's a car commercial come to life. And slamming on the brakes for that idiotically designed merge to 45 South will provide an entertaining challenge. As mega-lawyer John O'Quinn learned, of course, caution should be taken on the parkway when it's raining.

2. Highway 225 through Pasadena
No one should be forced to breathe the air along Refinery Row any longer than possible.

3. The exit ramp downtown to Pierce from 45
Since cops love to camp out there with radar guns unseen just below the hump of the road, make them earn their pay.

4. 290 at rush hour
Look, no one's moving anyway. Make the speed limit 1025 mph for all it would matter.

5. U.S. 59 through the Piney Woods
You get much beyond Kingwood, and you never know when you're going to be contributing to the new flashy rec room at some podunk town's police headquarters.

That entrance from Allen Parkway to I-45 South induces such a high pucker factor, it is 2 days before you can take a dump.

That cracked me up, thanks for a great laugh!

Buffalo Speedway through West U. It is called a SPEEDway, but the limit there is 30 and they actually enforce it, (especially if you're not white). Screw you, West U, I'm gonna speed on this speedway.

Damn straight. If you don't look like you "belong" there, they will pull your ass over. It's fucked up and everyone in town knows it, even if some people refuse to believe that race plays a part in anything.

So they look at the color of your skin before pulling you over? Horseshit.

How many times have you been pulled over there? Give me a number. 0?

Go to the court house in West U and see how many white people are waiting to pay tickets.

Not horseshit, DWBs happen in West U frequently.

Let me get your statement straight: You ask for proof, and when given proof, you refuse to accept it. Would you like me to send to photo copies of the tickets? Maybe a signed letter from a judge or maybe the attorney general. Why stop there, why not get the United Nations involved, along with the Pope and the Dalai Lama? Therefore, there is no amount of evidence in the world that could convince you. This begs the question why even ask for proof in the first place if you refuse to accept any?Why would I keep driving through there? Because I live in Houston and am entitled to drive wherever I please. But all of these will never be answered because you aren't here for any other reason other than to be a contrarian. You have never shown any willingness to engage anyone here, ever. You only ever post here to call people names as if this was the third grade.

Your claim lacks credibility (you are almost always full of shit) and believability. (if you keep getting harassed by the West U Police ((allegedly)), why would you keep traveling thru West U?) Doesn't make any sense. You need to work on your story.

Hmm basic common sense should tell you if you are claiming something the burden of proof is on you, not me.

So you claim you've been pulled over 3 times for nothing in West U? I don't believe that, sorry. I think you are making it all up. Prove it.

A number? You sound like a broken record. How bout this. Since you are in the minority here, why don'y YOU prove to everyone else that what we are saying isn't true? And for the record, I've been pulled over 3 times in West U while driving the speed limit. It happens in other parts of town as well. Remember that high schooler who was shot in his parents own driveway by the police?

How many are there? Give me a number.
