Tommy Lee Jones for Senate: Congressman Gene Green Says Why the Hell Not?

Senator Tommy Lee Jones?
Geoff Berg, host of KPFT's Partisan Gridlock show, is leading the improbable battle to draft Tommy Lee Jones as a Democratic candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison.

They've got a Facebook page and everything, including a petition with an open letter to the actor:

Let's face it: Texas needs new representation in Washington. Not many people graduated cum laude from Harvard after attending on a scholarship, few can make it in the movies and few of us have what it takes to work a west Texas cattle ranch. We admire what you've done and now ask that you do something for us.

Today Congressman Gene Green didn't quite climb on the bandwagon, but he didn't laugh at the idea either.

"I think he'd be great...I think his name ID would go a long way," Green told Berg on the show.

As for qualifications, beyond a Harvard degree and being pals with Al Gore, they seemed to be name ID, which Green kept mentioning. "I don't think there's any doubt it's worth exploring," he said.

Jones has not given any indication he's itching to become a senator as opposed to working his ranch and horses in San Saba and taking the occasional acting gig.

But it would be a whole lot more entertaining than watching another generic Democrat get his or her ass whipped.

Just a reminder for all y'all in Houston who don't know what's going on up here in the "Barnett Shale," Tommy Lee Jones "promoted" shale gas drilling back in 2005 with his movie star image on billboards all over Tarrant County. This makes me wonder about the "real" story behind the backers of this draft movement. The "unnatural" shale gas industry is trying this one, now. Not surprising. Gene Green needs to think again. TLJ is NOT the one for Democrats. But he is the ONE for the shale gas industry!

How about a summary of his politics before drafting him? Yeesh.

Well, he has something hardly any Republican got here in Texas. An education. Not only do the rightwingers here not read or write intelligibly, they want to force kids to be just as ignorant as they are.

It is a little scary when we see so many of our beloved Texas Repubs on national tv for frightening yet entertaining ideas. Perry, Riddle, Gomert, Paul...who am I forgetting? Cornyn of course, is about as deep as a canyon river.

Because I've been called a troll here and fit the definition ever so well.

Why bother? You weren't interested before and I don't blame you. Look up the definition of an internet troll. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=internet+...And the funny thing is that some of them here used to be funny and game for a good time. Before this new commenting system, trolls used to abound daily with crazy, hilarious rants.

You have never engaged anyone on any site here. All you do is spout whatever comes into your head without thinking. "A smart liberal? Is that an oxymoron?"Really, that isn't inflammatory? Did you write that and then think to yourself, "Boy, I'm sure sticking it to these Liberals. If that doesn't change their ways, nothing will!"I tried having a discussion with you. I know that can be a difficult task on the internet, but it is possible. But no, you won't have any of it. You aren't willing to engage in anything with substance. And you might not think that you are here for the benefit of everyone else here, but when people come here and see comments like yours, what are they going to think? That this is a place where people can actual discussions or instead hurl juvenile insults.

You have to admit that your style of writing here can be seen as trolling. I have never seen you engage someone in a discussion beyond hackneyed one liners. I did call you a troll, but have seen the error of my way because that is no way to deal with people like you. I am now trying to bring you into a discussion in a respectful way. If you are interested in having a serious discussion, I'm game. If you aren't, then at least say as much so I and other commenters know that you are here not for the benefit of the community but to wind people up.

I understand that they do, but could you elaborate a little? I do agree that people have the right to be as smart or dumb as they want to be, so we have some middle ground. No need for aggression, this is a civil place, or at least we try to make it so.

We are all entitled to our opinions. I would be interested in why you believe that. We welcome all voices here.

Repubbing = singing the same old song = financial breaks for the wealthy then 'balancing the budget' on the backs of the middle class, the poor, our children, the sick, the disabled and the elderly = a cowardly, selfish, greedy, shortsighted and dangerous lack of a vsion for the future.

I'm in graduate school and use "got" and "fixin' ta" and "y'all." I'm an East Texan by all means and speak like one. I am not ashamed and do not want to be a part of a generic American community and use the standard Midwest dialect, because I am a Texan first. Contrary to popular belief, you can be highly educated and still retain your accent and dialect, like William F. Buckley, JFK, et al.

But I guess only Southerners who speak with their Southern accent are uneducated, correct? All those people who go to Haa-vahd and have a Bostonian accent are way better than Texans despite not using American Standard English. Go back to your Yankee hellhole and get off your high horse.

Are you off your little soapbox now?

You don't consider calling someone a troll a juvenile insult? Step off your high horse.

What would you like to discuss. Name it. I'm game.

FYI, I'm not here to benefit the community. If you make a dumb comment, as you are prone to do, you can expect someone to address it. If you don't like it, leave.

No, I will not admit that. You are making it up.

Now what do you want to discuss?
