Think Warm Thoughts With the Dynamo's New Stadium. The Dynamo's Weird New Stadium

You may be cold now, but soon enough you'll be baking as you try to watch the Dynamo.

Soon, though -- the 2012 season -- you'll be at least partially shaded, in the team's new stadium near downtown.

Official drawings are out from lead architect Populous and they show...a spaceship-looking thing.

The official architect-ese description:

Rising above the tree canopy, the stadium alludes to the heritage of its neighborhood through use of simple industrial materials. Arranged in a distinctive tessellated pattern, the stadium skin evokes an industrial gem of individually composed, expanded metal facets. Punctuating this bold architectural form, the new stadium is highlighted in orange polycarbonate at three-story-high entries and throughout new spectator areas. Dynamo orange accentuates the unique design across the building, as all structures penetrating through the metal skin are clad in the same orange paneling.

"We set out to design the perfect urban soccer stadium; tight, atmospheric and intimate," said Christopher Lee of Populous. "It's a beautiful stadium for the beautiful game."

Very well designed. I thought it was Frank Gehry that did this at 1st glimpse. Very different from the typical designs for our other stadiums. Boo naysayers & Go Houston Dynamo!

This new stadium looks great! It will be an awesome destination spot for locals and those visiting for games! This should also increase our chances for future events like the Olympics.

I hope Immigration will have a permanent office and jail there, to arrest and deport all the illegals that will be attending on our tax dollars.

The architect modeled this using the old Quake engine? I would not attend any games out of fear of being scragged by a scrag.

I'm tired of all new stadiums copying that damn Birds Nest in Beijing.

It looks like that bird's nest from the Beijing Olympics.

If you take a close look, it looks like they are using the metal facade to wrap around what it a budget set of bleachers that happen to have a partial roof. I guess that is all $60 mil will get you now. And please God, don't give Aramark the concessions.

First of all, if you actually went to the groundbreaking, you'll see a lot of "white people" that attended. Soccer is not just for foreigners, americans enjoy it as well. Also, when you think about it foreigners, and illegals who like soccer are likely to stay loyal to their native football clubs, so there are few illegals who actually go to watch the pro sports teams. If anything, it is the children of illegals and foreigners who are fans of the dynamo.

What a jerk...almost NO tax dollars, quite unlike the deal for football, baseball, or basketball. These haters are fast and free with their own set of facts. Just because they keep repeating the lies does not make any of them true. The stadium was needed and will be another asset to the City of Houston. Oh yeah, once the stadium is finished it will be deeded over to the City and County. Houston is a sanctuary City, by choice of the City and County officials that we elected. I doubt that the percentage of illegals attending a Dynamo soccer match is any higher than at an Astros game. No government official does anything about illegals anyway. That is a fact. The stadium is not being built for illegals. That is just more "haters" bull_ _ _ _!" There is no shortage of "Bull _ _ _ _" from INS.

Ha, just said the same thing. Should have read your comment first. It's such a played out design.
