Another Oil Rig Explosion In Gulf

Categories: Environment
Another oil rig has exploded in the Gulf, injuring one person and raising fears of another massive leak.

All the 13 workers on board have been accounted for. Officials are not sure if any oil is leaking from the rig, which is about 80 miles south of Louisiana's Vermilion Bay.

The Department of Homeland Security said the rig was not in the process of producing oil and gas and was in about 2,500 feet of water and owned by Mariner Energy of Houston.

KPRC has different info from the AP/Washington Post stuff above: "Houston-based Mariner Energy spokesman Patrick Cassidy said the platform is in about 320 feet of water and was producing about 1,700 barrels of oil a day."

The station also notes the rig was being sold to Apache, and the incident "should not affect the sale," which seems to indicate not-a-catastrophe status. Things could change, of course.
