Cleaning House at T.H. Rogers And Elsewhere In HISD
Just one case in point seems to be Cathryn White, the principal at acclaimed T.H. Rogers school who came under fire from many of her teachers who said she was overbearing and underperforming.
White has announced that she is leaving Rogers -- with two weeks to go before the start of the school year and after just two years at the school.
Citing "family" concerns, White wrote in an August 3 letter to Rogers staff, parents and community that she was moving to a part-time position with the West Region Office "that will allow me to be more available and present for my family. As you may know , I have three young children and I am devoted to giving them my very best. I feel this change will allow me to do that."
In a Houston Federation of Teachers survey of Rogers teachers done in the spring, 56 percent of those responding said White failed to meet minimum standards in providing instructional leadership.
A followup survey commissioned by Houston ISD itself only added fuel to the fire.
The HISD survey backed up some of the basic findings of the March survey done by the Houston Federation of Teachers. Rogers teachers scored White and the school she runs low in the areas of focus, communication and problem-solving.
Dr. Marvin Fairman, who conducted the survey for HISD, said the school was operating "in the red zone," which, as it implies, was not good.
Longtime assistant principal David Muzyka will be the Rogers interim principal while the search is on for a new leader.
