Laura Palacios of Houston died with her son at her side. Though it was hardly a comfort to the 51-year-old woman: It was her son who allegedly killed her.

That's the story told by Harris County Sheriff's homicide detectives who have charged Jose Palacios, 24, with murder. But he is not behind bars. Instead, he's believed to have fled south across the border into Mexico, eluding the relatively short arm of Texas law enforcement.

On August 3, detectives began investigating the death of a woman found badly burned inside a Chrysler 300 near a Harris County Flood Control retention pond near the 13600 block of Westpark. Five days later, the authorities pieced together enough evidence to charge Jose Palacios with killing his mom.

Detectives say Laura Palacios was last seen a week ago today when she told her husband in the morning that she was going to pick up her son near the corner of Westheimer and Eldridge. A surveillance video from a gas station near the intersection showed the mother meeting her son there at 12:25 p.m. and then driving away together. The Houston Fire Department found Laura Palacios' charred body in the Chrysler 25 minutes later, investigators say.

Border agents at a the checkpoint in Laredo have reported that Jose Palacios crossed into Mexico at 10 p.m. that Monday night driving a black Ford F-150 pickup. Investigators say they believe he may have been heading to Monterey or Vera Cruz.

A possibly delusional man claiming he was under attack died late last week in the arms of Houston paramedics trying to revive him.

Houston police say that the man, whose name has not yet been released, walked through the front door of the La Rinconcita Bar at 8102 Irvington just before 10:30 p.m. on Friday and began bothering customers, grabbing them and saying that people were chasing him and trying to kill him. Soon after, the man was kicked out and the police and fire department were called. Witnesses told the cops that they saw the man crawl underneath a car and heard him say that someone was under the car with him trying to hurt him.

When paramedics arrived, police say, the man started fighting them while they tried to figure out what was wrong. When a policeman joined a paramedic trying to pin the man down, he lost consciousness and paramedics could not find his pulse as they began CPR, police say. The man was taken to LBJ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say that witnesses attest that they did not see the officers and paramedics do anything to harm the man. The case is being investigated by HPD's Internal Affairs Division.

Houston police are also investigating the death of a man found along the 5900 block of Selinsky early Friday morning. They say Kenny Tippins, 18, was found dead in the passenger seat of a gray 2009 Toyota Sequoia SUV in the parking lot of the Crystal Springs Apartments. Detectives believe Tippins, who was shot several times, was killed somewhere else and then driven to the apartment building. Police say they have no known witnesses or suspects.

A man was stabbed to death last Tuesday along the 2800 block of Loraine, police say. The victim and an unknown person were arguing at about 9 p.m. when the victim decided to run away. But the killer was faster of foot, tracking him down and stabbing him several times. The knifeman then fled.
