The ceremony for Houston's Tommy Tune awards has become a high point on the local high-school drama calendar, as productions from all over the area enjoy their own version of the Tonys.

Now the nominees have even more reason to get incredibly tense as the winners are announced: at stake may be a trip to New York and a four-year scholarship at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Two big-time arts organizations --  Nederlander Presentations and the Pittsburgh Civic Light Orchestra (which, with TUTS, has become an important player in regional theater) -- announced today that the winners of local high-school contests will be brought in for workshops and teaching, and if they go on to win a National High School Musical Theatre award, they'll get a four-year scholarship to NYU.
Thirty-two students who have been winners in one of 16 regional contests across the country are eligible for a "Jimmy Award" and all that entails.

"High school musical theater is often the first point of incubation for the performers of tomorrow," Kent Gash of the Tisch School said in a release. "We in musical theater here at Tisch School of the Arts are eager to celebrate the work of these talented young people and are delighted to be able to encourage arts education and the development of the nation's best and brightest young performers through supporting The Jimmys!"
