Houston Astros Spring Training: Prognosis Not Good

As the Astros guy around here, I feel obligated to say something about the team. But seriously, just what is there to say about a team that is 1-10-1 so far in spring training play? That the team is bad is actually something to be expected. And the fact that spring training records count for absolutely nothing is also something in which I believe.

But...

1-10-1?

Certainly that means a little something.

Now the team has been without Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt, and LaTroy Hawkins - they've been off playing in that World Baseball Classic thing though Lee is already back and Tejada is due back soon. Brandon Backe and Wandy Rodriguez are injured. And the rest of the pitching staff has been getting beat up so bad that it appears the Astros are actually going to rely on Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz to be healthy for the season - not that Ortiz was that great when he was healthy.

The best hitter in the camp, third baseman Chris Johnson, will probably be rewarded with his great spring by being sent back to the minors because the powers that be seem to prefer the Aaron Boone/Geoff Blum tandem. None of the catchers are hitting, and while Ivan Rodriguez - one of the greatest catchers in MLB history - is still a free agent, the Astros are still thinking Humberto Quintero/J.R. Towles/Lou Palmisano.

Yeah, that should really have you excited to start the season. No wonder Drayton is being warned by MLB that his attendance will probably see a drop-off of more than 20-percent this season.

The economy is in the crapper. People are being laid off left and right. So it's not really like it should be expected that the Astros would be any better than the rest of the world - hell, I don't even think Jim Cramer could find anything good to say about the Astros, and he can find say something good to say about pretty much any organization. Drayton McLane's been pulling a Bernie Madoff-type pyramid scam on the fans for years anyway. And eventually, as Bernie can tell now us, even good pyramid scams come to an end.

The 1-10-1 record indicates nothing as to how the Astros will actually do come the regular season. But I do think it's fair to say that the Astros are going to suck really badly. Not that we didn't know that already.
