OMG SALMA HAYEK BREASTFEEDING WTF!?!

OMG OMG OMG Salma Hayek breast fed a baby in Sierra Leone OMG OMG OMG!

Seriously, what is this, the next Yalta Conference? You would think so, given the reaction of the popular and not-so-popular press.

Google "Salma Hayek breastfeeding" and you'll get such lovely quotes and comments as "Lucky baby" and "She's got enough to feed the needy" and "I don't care if it's Hayek, breastfeeding's gross" on Yardbarker and other sites. In addition to such lovely chatter, the event won "biggest eyebrow raiser award" over on Entertainment Weekly's site and even TIME got into the mix with a health article about whether or not it is safe to nurse another woman's baby. And, of course, the event wouldn't be complete without the whole "But what does it all mean?" story over on ABC News.

People cannot stop talking about it which is why I am talking about it here, too. (Guilty as charged.) What I find fascinating is that men either react to it in a grossed out way (e.g. "breastfeeding's gross"), or they have to may a big sex joke out of it (e.g. "lucky baby"). Not to paint all men with a wide brush, but it is funny and interesting to me that once again a woman's breasts are either thought of only as tools for feeding babies (which for some reason grosses some men out) or as huge sacks of sex fun for men. (Seriously, we're flattered, but I've had mine for about 20 years, and I don't find them that exciting.)

Is it that impossible to view a woman as just a person who has breasts that are appealing on some level and that on another level do a certain bodily function that helps keep our species alive? Why can't you just see the big picture?

Bottom line: This story couldn't interest me any less. I'm bored writing this. (Are you still reading?) I think it's awesome what Hayek did, frankly, and I think if it helps get attention for hungry babies in developing nations, that would be even more awesome. (Although somehow, I doubt that the folks commenting on blogs give a shit about Sierra Leone.) But other than that, I do not care. Salma Hayek breast fed a baby. Now let's just move on.
