On-The-Scenes Report From DC: It's Cold

freezing1.jpgA few minutes ago, my 12-year-old son John Henry rang in from Washington, where he attended the Inauguration with a group from Pershing Middle School.

"Did you hear Senator Kennedy had a seizure?" he asked without saying hello.

I had not heard that, I told him.

"I don't think the Inauguration was worth it," he added. "We were out there for eight hours, and it was like negative three degrees."

I did the math in my head.

"You mean you got there at four in the morning?" I asked.

"Yeah, and we could only see it on TV monitor that was lagging," he said. He's still mad about a re-jiggering of their seating arrangement. Until organizers realized the vastness of this crush of humanity, his group had been slated for seats near the front. For their own safety, they were moved toward the rear.

And yet I still can't help but think that in a few short years, all those gripes will recede beneath the magnitude of his eternal ability to be able to say: "I was there!"
