Over the Weekend: Avant Garden, Silver Jews, High Island, Oak Island and Galveston

After several days of coolness, the weather gods brought the heat yesterday. Great timing, considering half the city still doesn't have a/c. Here's what we were doing when we weren't sitting around and sweating.

One way to tell things are slowly getting back to normal: At a benefit for the Houston Food Bank on Saturday, September 20, the cops stopped by to hand out a noise citation. Click here for photos from Bill Olive.

Silver Jews at Walter's on Washington

On Thursday, September 18, the sight was painfully familiar: a crowd of people in a parking lot, waiting. But instead of water, ice or MREs, this group desperately needed some kind of shared experience that didn’t involve clearing debris or scavenging for supplies - in short, music (really, really good music). It’s probably safe to say that other than the communities on the Bolivar Peninsula, no places in Texas were ravaged worse by Hurricane Ike than the bayside Chambers County towns of Oak Island and Smith Point. Click here for a dispatch from John Nova Lomax and here for photos from Daniel Kramer.

The Journey to High Island After Hurricane Ike

We heard High Island was a real island immediately after the storm, but we made it there on September 18 by car...eventually. Click here for a dispatch from Craig Malisow, and here and here for video and photos from Daniel Kramer.

Dozens of animal rescue personnel flocked to the island from Michigan, Colorado, New York, Louisiana and California to help save abandoned animals. Click here for a dispatch from Craig Malisow.

Here's hoping you and yours are doing okay. We're still updating our list of open places, and there's also our community message board. -- Keith Plocek
