Garbage Pick-up Not Going Smoothly In The `Burbs

Categories: Hurricane Ike
Sure the far western reaches of the Houston are having the better of it when it comes to power, but they're falling behind in another area: garbage collection.

Many of the `burbs get pick-up from Waste Management, and that company has issued a statement saying there's so much debris to be picked up that crews are falling behind.

They advise, uniquely, patience.

So the streets of the suburbs will be filled not only with downed limbs, but with the sweet smell of un-picked-up garbage.

At least the residents can hide in their air-conditioned houses to escape the stench.

We've asked the Houston Public Works Department how their pick-up efforts are going; we'll update when we hear back from them.

For now, here's part of the Waste Management statement:

Because of the heavy volume, Waste Management drivers are currently a half-day to a full day behind on some routes. As a result, some routes may not be completed on the designated day. In those cases, Waste Management will collect any remaining household garbage from the previous day, starting the following morning.
