We Hear Houston Is Lovely. Have You Tried There?
The homeless population in suburban Fort Bend County is surging, though you'd never know it from talking to the mayors of Katy and Sugar Land.
They're in denial.
The county lacks virtually any safety net to catch its growing underclass. Many people seeking help are told to go to Houston, which amounts to a cruel joke since there's no public transit linking the counties and Houston's shelters often have no room.
Want to add your two cents and maybe tell some public officials to get off their duffs and do something? Then attend the March 2 community meeting at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land. The 9 a.m. discussion will include where to build emergency and transitional shelters and which group — unaccompanied youths, men, families, people with mental health or substance abuse problems - needs the most help.
