Heavy Lifting

Someone's looking out for the big dog. A mystery humanitarian has popped up in Galveston County offering to pay for free spaying and neutering for dogs weighing 40 pounds and more, and their puppies. All they have to do is live with a low-income human family and the canines in question have to be the opposite of a Chihuahua. Well actually, a $20 donation is requested but if you're really really poor, they'll bypass that as well. And even $20 is a lot cheaper than what the vets in town charge. All this is being operated out of LaMarque by Sean Hawkins' Animal Alliance Spay & Neuter Clinic. According to Hawkins, large dogs don't move out of shelters real well. Also, because they are so big, it costs more to have them spayed or neutered. And big dogs tend to have big (as in number) litters. This means more big dogs that fewer people want are taking up more space on the planet. So basically, a lot of them get euthanized. Call the clinic at 409-933-1600. — Margaret Downing
