The Kid hammed it up for the camera, like a true star...

You may have heard that the Houston Zoo is looking for help in naming its newborn elephant, whom staffers say currently goes by "The Kid." Starting today, you can vote on a name on the Zoo's site. (There's even a drawing for faboulous Zoo-themed prizes.)

You've got until November 10 to choose. Unfortunately, you can't write-in something clever like a Simpsons-themed "Stampy" or a even write-in-themed "Shelley Sekula-Gibbs." They've got five names for you to choose from, plus explanations:

Colossus (He's big!)
Guinness (He's the largest baby elephant birth on record)
Sundar (In Hindu/India it means "attractive.")
Janu (In Hindu/India it means "soul" or "life force.")
Mac (Did we say he's big? Like the truck!)

...but later got a swat on the butt from his 8,000-pound Aunt Meethi.

I stopped by the Zoo this afternoon to visit "The Kid," who, I might say, could be called "Cute Little Bastard." The 411-pound, 24-day-old tyke flapped his ears, smashed up a pumpkin and waved his honker at me. The guy's gonna be a star.

The young pachy apparently is a smashing pumpkins fan. Get it? Anyone...?

Several of the Houston Zoo staffers I've spoken to say they're hoping for Guinness. (Pity that "Schlitz" wasn't available.) Considering that the little guy's slated to reach between 12 and 14,000 pounds, that'll be one big Guinness. — Steven Devadanam
