Grace Church (Obviously) Uneasy About Giving LGBTQ Community Some Protections

Fear of a gender-neutral toilet.
Oh, the Riggle's were at it again last night at their Grace Community Church. After sending out a three-page letter last week giving their followers some of the all-caps "truths" about Houston's equal right's ordinance proposal.

Their main fear, as usual: the mobs of gay and transgender people (and those mystery men who will dress up like ladies to go into bathrooms).

The event last night at the church on Gulf Freeway was live-tweeted by Kris Banks of the GLBT Political Caucus, under the hashtag #herohaters.

Based on those tweets and the letter sent out May 15 (not to mention Becky Riggle's odd appearance at City Council to take on Councilwoman Ellen Cohen) the event was a pure homophobic hoedown.

In case you're unfamiliar with the level of intellect of the pastors Riggle, here's a paragraph from that letter that nearly swayed us to the anti-HERO side.

There is no comparison between this ordinance and a true Civil Rights bill. Instead, this bill would be the equivalent of forcing a print shop owned by African Americans to print KKK posters. As for those who say that gay is the new black, there is no behavior or lifestyle associated with being black, but there is a definite behavior and lifestyle associated with being gay.

Obviously, we're kidding about this making any sense to us. But we know that Grace Church's followers are not.

Think about it, the ppl that dress "normal" are the ones that fuck up shyt. Look at the santa barbara shooter, pedophiles, ppl in wall street and these fockers that spread hate in the cover of religion. They make me sick. How many tatted up ppl with color hair and piercings fucked up the economy, molested kids and prejudged you like these ppl?

Transgender people do not use their "life style as a cover" for their perversions...Im soooo glad to have left Grace church...I always would leave the service when the tone would turn homophobic.Becky Riggle looked and sounded like a fool at the City Council meeting...

I wouldn't be uneasy if a man dressed as a woman was in the women's restroom, but if it is a law then creeper men have a whole new venue of victims.

Really, we should think of the children and end the discussion there. Think. of. the. children. Everyone should be locked down and under quarantine. It doesn't matter what is actually demonstrably dangerous to the children.

Danny Noman

So, if a woman dressed as a woman goes into a woman's bathroom, no matter what her intentions are, she is protected by law to do so? Holy moly this is ridiculous!!

There are plenty of extremely normal-looking people who are predators, and plenty of transgender people who are the kindest, most well intentioned people you'll ever meet. Just because they're scary and you don't understand them - they make you uncomfortable - doesn't mean they're bad people. And don't let think-of-the-children-style fear skew actual understanding of what's responsible for harming children. Certainly don't use it to take away the rights of other human beings.

This coming from Grace doesn't surprise me. They used to be decent but then they took a Right turn at fire and brimstone because it made them more money.

Nobody subscribes to the Houston Press, Rebecca. Nobody, not you, and not anybody else. The Press doesn't sell subscriptions.

What can we do about the male predator pedophiles that attack boys in the men's room? Maybe we can ban men from the men's room too.

The sad part about this whole thing is that people are getting so focused on one thing, that has already been dropped by the way, that they lose focus on what really matters here. Most opposition sound just as ignorant and misinformed as the Riggles. Don't be a follower and react to some dumb post by saying "men it's time to stand your ground" instead go educate yourself on this ordinance and draw your own conclusions. By the time Grace Church posted this the City Council had already dropped the infamous bathroom clause and I wish Houston Press would have done a little more research and stated that.

I'm unsubscribing now, Houston Press. Flawed logic and assumptions.

That part of the ordinance had been dropped so no worries on men being in women's bathrooms.

That part of the ordinance has been dropped so stand down.

That part of the ordinance has been dropped so if that is the only argument then you have no grounds for objection correct?

Research research research. The bathroom part was dropped from the bill. Stop arguing about it. They pulled it from the bill and its no where to be found.

While vacationing in Quebec City a few years back, the public restroom was gender neutral. I wasn't quite sure what to think but it really wasn't a big deal.

It's a dumb law, and maybe it's how the church is saying what they are saying, versus what they are actually saying that is just as uneasy as the law. As many times in life, people and groups of people react in a very ineffective way to something, that in many respects is a bad law or legislation. Men should not be allowed in a woman's bathroom, under any circumstance...this law is another example of political correctness and the FAR left going to far. In the end, this gives pedophiles an extra opportunity to do bad things. If you are a man, if you have male reproductive parts and not female reproductive organs, you belong in the men's bathroom.

It's disheartening as well that those who don't agree with or have a difference of opinion towards this community are immediately labeled as those who hate the community and aren't acting "Christ like". The community doesn't like to be discriminated against, but it's okay for the community to discriminate against those who aren't as them? Houston Press is exactly like all media trying to stir up contraversy with snippets of things that will rial up peoples emotions. I don't see the quoted part of him talking about love for everyone including those in the community and this is to avoid those predators from using the rights that you are asking for to thier advantage. Even towards your children and wives.

We are currently in the process of an NDO here in Bozeman, Montana and Grace Church, and others of that ilk, used the same fear and smear tactic. Our commissioners' meetings went on for hours because of public comment filled with sordid tales of bathroom orgies, sex cults, pedophiles and men in women's clothing hiding in the restroom to rape women. Some even had their daughters speak about how scared they were to go to the restroom. I wanted to point out to the men who paraded their daughters up and filled their heads with lies and filth, that statistics show they are more likely to molest their daughter than a transgender in the bathroom.

The thing about these people and their message is the more they talk, the more the crazy comes out, which hurts them more than anyone else.

As for our NDO, which is fully inclusive of transgendered persons, the first reading passed unanimously. Our second (and final) reading is scheduled for next month.

Good luck to Houston (my former stomping grounds) in getting yours passed!

I don't know how to feel about this. As a man, I couldn't care less about who is in the restroom. But were I a 9 year old boy? Maybe I would.

And what about those who will use this for EXACTLY that...to take advantage, to be a sexual predator...there are evil people in every profession but we aren't talking about that right now. We are talking about this specific issue of men being allowed to be in ladies rooms and vice versa. And I for one who is about to bring a child into this world am EXTREMELY uncomfortable with it. Doesn't mean I don't love the people of this world.

Nothing ever gets solved by changing the subject "what about this." The teachers acting a fool and other matters are debated at length. Let's talk about how folks truly feel about this matter.

But what about the predators that don't use that particular lifestyle as a cover? What about the predators that use the teaching profession as a cover???

And what about the people that are teaching our children? The people who sleep with their students (of the opposite sex) how do you show your concern for those who hide their TRUE perversion?

Leticia Espinosa Manyoma

It's not about being uncomfortable about that community, it's about being concerned with those predators that try to use that life style as a cover for thier perversions as predators.

Honesty, could this be any MORE bigoted and un-Christian?  When transgender women visit the restroom, they're in there to USE THE RESTROOM, not to do anything to or with anyone else who happens to be in that restroom!  God can't POSSIBLY be as narrow-minded as that!

This as what Jesus was really concerned about. Who cares about helping those in need, that takes time and effort. Much better to ignore everything Jesus said and the whole new covenant thing and just keep on acting like Pharisees.

So it would be ok for a biological woman who lives as a man to use the mens room? But not ok for a biological man who lives as a woman to use the womens room!

Ok, I got it.

As a Christian this is embarrassing and is not Christ like at all! This ministry needs to follow the teaching of Christ not assume. Even Christ says "He without sin cast the first stone" as a prostitute was going to get stoned by a mob!

Christ flipped tables in the temple because they were selling in it! BTW every church has a book store! Need I say more!

I know for a fact that transgender people are not trying to do anything to anyone! All the transgender community wants to do is use the restroom in peace and without judgement.

Not every transgender woman looks like a guy in a dress! Ask yourself when was the last time you seen a transgender person?

Could you imagine being a closet case in that church? Those poor children will now understand hate on a whole new level. I'm sure it's confusing too to be in a place where they talk about love and acceptance for these people over here and then make stupid displays like this one (hate), towards those people over there. Hypocrites. The world appears to be chocked full of 'em.

One relative and one friend asked me what the mayor was up to allowing men in women's restrooms. They had no idea that the proposal was about discrimination in employment.  If you were to poll Houstonians on whether gay people should be treated as everyone else in hiring and firing.....the  majority would agree. The original proposal should have been more carefully crafted to avoid the demonization that predictably focused on restrooms.

What's funny about that is that if I saw Tammy Faye Baker in her prime, I don't think I could immediately discount the possibility that she was a man in drag.

@victoriamwilliams1 Exactly

The proposal was directed at

people undergoing sex changes, that they should use the bathroon that matches their current sex, not their "born with" sex on their ID card.

Without this proposal, the first person here, born male, must continue to use the mens room

https://www.metabunk.org/data/MetaMirrorCache/8d0286f94975c51ae3fbd644f0ff7312.jpg

And the second person, born female, legally has to use the ladies restroom

Do you see that there is much less likelihood of creating a big fuss if these people just used the bathroom that matches

their appearance?
