Texans Tracker: Texans Have Allegedly Already Decided on Jadeveon Clowney
In previous years, we'd be in the home stretch for NFL Draft season now. Forever, the draft has been in or around the third weekend of April, but for reasons that don't really matter at this point, the league has moved it to May 8 through May 10.
Clowney talk updates the tracker.
And in the age of social media and a land rush to be the guy who guesses what the Texans do with the No. 1 overall pick, this means three more weeks of worthless conjecture, anonymous sources and "people tell me" journalism.
Currently, if there were a title for the king of this sort of reporting, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report would be running away with it.
Jadeveon Clowney has been picking up steam for some time as the likely choice for the Texans at No. 1 overall. Never mind that they desperately need a quarterback, and never mind that Clowney's fit in Romeo Crennel's defense is somewhat sketchy. Clowney has wowed everyone with his superhero physical skills, so much so that there's a noticeable consensus difference in his raw rating as a prospect between him and whoever is next on the list.
Photo by Ian Mccor Clowney's too big for his tights, we guess.
Also, Clowney has opted to shut down his private workouts for the remainder of draft season, which has led to a ton of speculation as to why.
Is Clowney concerned about sustaining an injury, especially after seeing a guy he went against every year in college (Brandon Thomas of Clemson) sustain a knee injury in a private workout in the last week or so?
Is Clowney just tired of being poked and prodded and he knows he has enough leverage to say, "Look at my film. There you go."?
(Both of these are acceptable rationales in my opinion, by the way.)
Or has Clowney already been told by the Texans that he will be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft? Wait, what? Yes, that's indeed what's being speculated by Miller.....
People I've talked to around the league believe Clowney is not working out because he's been told he'll be the No. 1 pick.— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) April 14, 2014
In February at the Combine, Miller had a "high-ranking team source" who said the Texans would take Blake Bortles if the draft were that day. In March, he reported that it "sounded like" Ryan Mallett "might be" reuniting with Bill O'Brien via trade.
Now, here we are in April, and "high-ranking team sources" and "sounds like" have begat the newest nebulous pseudo-source -- "people I've talked to around the league!"
Meanwhile, Blake Bortles is in town today on his visit to NRG Stadium. Johnny Manziel and Khalil Mack visit next week.
Are "people around the league" aware of this?
