Sheriff's Deputy/Pizza Delivery Driver Shot a Man in the Face in Robbery Attempt
Who is the part-time Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy who also delivers pizza for Domino's?
An off-duty deputy named Shaft, kept coworkers at Domino's safe.
Who is the man that would shoot a suspected robber in the face and risk his life for his co-workers?
Can you dig it?
They say this 25-year veteran of the sheriff's office is a bad mother.
Shut your mouth.
I'm 'talm bout Shaft.
(Sung with an Isaac Hayes voice, to the theme of "Shaft")
The last thing you'd probably expect is for a pizza delivery driver to be a gun-toting off-duty sheriff's deputy. But that was the case last week when Glenn Shaft got into a gunfight with two suspected robbers at the Domino's pizza store he works at in north Harris County.
Christian Franklin and Walter Jones were arrested and are still recovering from the shootout. They will be charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the Feb. 28 incident, according to the sheriff's office.
Shaft, 54, is part of a sheriff's program started three years ago to rehire retired deputies on a part-time basis, said Thomas Gilliland, a sheriff's office spokesman. Shaft usually works at the Port of Houston monitoring shipping and receiving, where he's paid around $20 an hour as an HCSO part-timer. He probably receives close to minimum wage for his delivery shift at Domino's.
Jones and Franklin allegedly entered the pizza shop on Louetta Road around midnight last Friday wearing gloves and bandannas covering their faces. They demanded money from employees, the sheriff's office said. They allegedly got into a brief shootout with Shaft, who was inside the store at the time and had drawn his weapon when he saw the place was getting robbed.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide unit, the district attorney's office shoot team and the sheriff's internal affairs department are all involved in investigating the incident because the situation involved an officer wounding suspects. Franklin was shot in the face and Jones was struck in the lower abdomen area, the two were take to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. They are still recovering and are expected to be transferred to a detention ward.
No one else was injured in the incident.
