Louie Gohmert Rejects Obamacare, Personally

Rep. Louie Gohmert, the uninsured man.

There's a lurching feeling that comes when you realize you don't have any health insurance. You'll be walking along, a swing in your step, a grin on your face, when it hits you: Anything could happen.

You just walked under a ladder. Fool! You just felt like you had to sneeze. It's pneumonia! That Toyota Corolla could easily veer off the street, and plow into you! Is that a headache or is something sinister that rhymes with "mancer"?

It's the terror of knowing anything is possible, and that, if anything should happen health-wise, you are utter;y uncovered and thus unprepared. Rep. Louie Gohmert and his wife must be taking very careful steps and lots of vitamins right now because the intrepid East Texas congressman has decided to forgo health insurance this year.

Gohmert gave up his insurance this year, asserting that the Affordable Care Act had made it too expensive. The couple's deductible had gone up from $3,000 to $6,000 and he was looking at paying $1,500 a month for coverage, up from $300, Gohmert told Trey Graham, an East Texas Baptist preacher, on a radio show.

Gohmert makes $174,000 as a member of Congress and he is eligible for a hefty employer subsidy of $950, according to the Dallas Morning News, but he has still chosen to join the uninsured. (Declining insurance has the added political benefit of being the guy who was so against Obamacare he wouldn't even have insurance, but we're sure that has nothing to do with Gohmert's decision. Totally irrelevant.)

So Gohmert and his wife will continue down their uninsured path. He has been against the Affordable Care Act from the beginning and he certainly is sticking to it. Plus, he's busy talking about Obamacare which leaves him no time to talk about gay marriage and "plumbing."
