Racing is dangerous business. Watching a race can be just as scary. On Sunday during the final lap of the Grand Prix of Houston, 13 spectators were injured with Dario Franchitti's car went flying through the air and into the fence sending debris into the stands.

According to reports, two of the injured went to the hospital with unknown injuries. Franchitti was reportedly awake and alert in a local hospital as well, said to have a concussion, a broken ankle and a fractured vertebrae that will not require surgery.

An IndyCar series official was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries. A statement was issued by IndyCar:

"Following an accident that occurred on-track at the Grand Prix of Houston this afternoon our greatest concern is for our fans and participants."

All races have all kinds of safety measures in place including massive walls and fences in front of grandstands. But, when cars go airborne, all bets are off and fans can be injured. Fortunately, it appears there were no serious injuries in this accident, including the drivers.
