Dear Drivers: Why Would You Not Wear a Seat Belt? Seriously, I'm Asking!

Yesterday, a Texas A&M football player and two other passengers of an SUV on a long road trip back to Texas died when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled multiple times on the side of the highway. The driver suffered only minor injuries. The difference for him was that he was the only one wearing a seat belt. One of those killed was a 13-year-old child.

When I was a kid in the '80s and I took drivers ed, I became quickly shocked and appalled by the fact that my parents didn't routinely wear their seat belts. My dad basically never wore his. Seeing all those "blood runs red on the highway" films scared the living hell out of me and I immediately began a campaign to get seat belts around the waists and chests of my family members.

Fortunately, it worked.

But, whenever I read about someone in a fatal accident who was not wearing a seat belt, I am at a loss as to why. I'm sure many of you remember the crash dummy PSAs, and anyone who hasn't been living in a cave or under a rock understands the value of staying inside your car when you are in an accident. There are even laws on the books to require the wearing of a seat belt. Still, some persist in not doing it and I can't figure that out.

The most common complaints are that they are restrictive or that people feel safer without them on. First, who gives a crap if they are restrictive? You're driving, not trying on a track suit. The very car you are in is restrictive. It's a metal can hurtling down the highway with you sitting just inches above the concrete. And yet the belt is too much?

As for that "I'm safer without it so I don't get trapped inside my car" nonsense, better to be stuck inside your car after an accident than lying on the highway after it. Many of the fatal injuries that occur in car accidents are the direct result of the passenger being ejected from the vehicle.

If for no other reason, you should wear a seat belt to at least appear like you aren't an idiot because going around without one on is just plain stupid.

There are three kids who didn't survive a crash, all because they didn't wear their belts. Don't end up like them. Be smart and put on the damn seat belt.

I'm a big boy, it's my call.  Call me a dope if you wish and sic the revenooers on me to force me to your will...but in the end it's my call.  If I crash and die it's no skin off your nose...guess it's my O.D.D. at play but I have a problem with those who would control my actions from the time I arise until after I hit the rack.

I don't for the same reason that I believe that you should be allowed to smoke weed. Personal freedom.

Many people die as a result of not. I used to not gelieve, but obeyed the law and do it and I now believe it does the job intended

I always, without fail, wear my seatbelt.

I also make damn sure any passengers (front or back) wear theirs. I don't even take it out of park unless everyone complies.

Like clockwork. Don't even have to think about it. Open door, take a seat, seatbelt on, ignition on, ready to roll, regardless of where I travel or the distance traveled. I am truly baffled by those who don't wear it.

I like to think I would anyway and I do, but my car won't shut up unless it's on.

Yes I do always wear mine. Had a wreck in 1987 that had I not been wearing it I would have been a part of the steering wheel. Left a nice bruise too.

I won't start the car unless I've got my seatbelt on...

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wear mine. Having seen what happens to people when they don't is enough to convince me. Plus, having been married to a paramedic...Wear your seatbelt folks.

It makes no sense to wear it just some of the time or just on road trips. Nobody can predict when an accident will happen - and it is much more likely to happen close to where you live, than on a long trip.  Why?  Because you mostly drive close to where you live... Duh.

Seat belts have killed as many as they have saved. Don't skew the facts. Also seat belt requirement started in the 70's as an insurane war against bodily harm claims in vehicular accidents. Look it up

Not wearing a seatbelt is grounds for The Darwin Award.

Always! Simple: it saves lives. When I didn't have kids we had an accident where everything flew out of the car. The only reason we didn't is because we were wearing seatbelts.

My parents would have died 30 years ago if they has not been wearing their seat belts.

I have a co-worker that refuses to wear a seat belt. So I refuse to ride in a car with him.

People want the freedom to be splattered on the asphalt. Isn't that why the helmet law was rescinded?

@dougwhitehead  "I have a co-worker that refuses to wear a seat belt. So I refuse to ride in a car with him."

I'm sure he's all broken up about that. haha

@h_e_x Exactly! One should be able to simply sign an organ donor card, have it prominently displayed on their vehicle, and roll on down the highway.

I share your befuddlement Jeff.  No one rides in my car unless they are buckled in. I won't start the car until everyone has their seat belt on. If they refuse, then we don't go or I tell them to get out.  Not worth any potential liabilty to me if someone wants to be a dumbass and gamble with their life.
