Dear 59/610 Exchange Drivers, Seriously, WTF?

Hi, fellow Houston drivers.

Listen, if you ever drive on 610 or Interstate 59 and use the intersection of those two freeways, we need to talk. There's a real problem. You should probably sit down.

This week alone, there have been two serious accidents at that location. One involved an overturned truck that blocked the freeway for the whole day. The second was Thursday morning in rush-hour traffic and log-jammed the place yet again. That interchange has been ranked as one of the worst in the entire state of Texas. It's an awful place, filled with angry drivers and the twisted metal rubble from accidents of days gone by. It's freaking Thunderdome.

So, I have two questions for you, dear driver.

1. Why do you drive there, like ever?

If you work or live in that general area, I guess I get it, but I lived very near there for a year and I avoided that interchange like it was Amanda Bynes on crack. Not only is it a crazy intersection, but it's nearly always jam-packed with traffic. Why not take Westpark or one of the side roads? Why subject yourself to daily danger, anguish and stress?

2. Why can't you be more careful?

Seriously, people there drive like Amanda Bynes on crack. In fact, Amanda Bynes on Crack is what they should call that whole area. People fly across multiple lanes to make their exit. They do this most frequently to get to the Galleria, as if Nordstrom was going to sell out of that $1,000 pair of sunglasses before they get there. THEY CAN BACK-ORDER IT, DAMNIT! If you know the area is dangerous, why not proceed with caution instead of suddenly turning into a stunt driver from The French Connection?

My point is that this is an area that is constantly loaded with traffic and very often the people in that traffic don't know what the hell they are doing. I drove through there once and literally saw a woman putting on mascara in the mirror with one hand and holding her cell phone in the other. She was driving with her freaking knees down the freeway while staring into her own reflection.

I saw another guy there in a Hummer who was weaving across lanes of traffic, whipping in between cars while eating a burger and talking on the phone. Way to go, Bro-Ham. I hope you enjoyed your thrill ride.

So, if you are going to/have to drive through this interchange at any time in the future, think of your safety, think of the safety of others, THINK OF THE CHILDREN, and drive like a normal, sane human being. If you simply can't do that, you might want to consider retiring from driving. We'd all be better off for it.

If you mention crooked handymen, or dishonest mechanics, or rude drivers, or lying roofers,  Houstonians always say it is people from elsewhere. Texas pride cannot admit the truth.

And speaking of bad drivers , yes Houston is the capital.  I hate when someone from behind me or the next lane over, speeeeeeeeds up and cuts in front of me when I have placed a 'safe zone' between me an a car in front.....then when the rude driver cuts in, he/she slams on her breaks to slowly turn into a lot.

WTF! when there were plenty space behind me, they cut in front and disrupts your commute.

Redesign the US-59/I-610 Interchange combined with West Park Toll, use the inner median lanes as a HOV-helpful improvements, since 2001 reconstruction of I-610 there was no improvements to the main lanes just exits and entrances. Some Engineer needs to do something before something far worse happens, especially when US-59 becomes I-69 and most of the NAFTA drivers want to see the new scenery instead of I-35.

610 to 290 is worse. Build it and they will come. And both areas have brain dead, mouth breathing rubberneckers.

My theory is that those who design(ed) Houston freeways are not subjected to drug testing. They do look great in aerial photos! Seriously though, do anything possible not to drive next to an 18 wheeler. Especially on the interchanges which are designed on an angled grade. Their loads shift which can, and does, cause them to tip over. Honk to your heart's delight. I am not driving next to it.

Yeah, never drive there unless I have to, absolutely have to. Just like coming from I-10 to 610 N and trying to get across to take the 290 exit.

Amanda Bynes on crack. Perfect analogy.

So true. In fact, I was driving south in the middle of the big storm today on that section of 610 and some a..hole in a huge truck cut right in front of me with only inches to spare. This was during the heaviest downpour and everybody had their flashing lights on. Damn, we have a lot of idiots in this city!

Houston drivers are the rudest and most reckless. This is just a showcase. And they have the gall to complain about red light cameras?

People need to stop whining.  ANY big city with the amount of people that Houston has will have all the traffic and their fair share of horrible drivers.  I am not from Houston, and yes, there are a lot of morons driving out there, but not any worse than any other major city.  Those who complaint so much and talk about worst driving, they probably come from places where there is never enough people to create a traffic jam.  yes, unfortunately Houston does not have enough major roads to allow traffic to flow easier, but that's the way big cities are.  If we are going to stay away from places just because there is a chance of having an accident, we might as well never lift a finger, because we can just fall out of bed and crack our heads.  It is not the worst place.

That's why I refuse to have longer than a ten minute commute - people can't even drive downtown without turning left from the right lane. Grrr!

You all running out of stuff to write about? Anyone who has lived in Houston for one month knows about that place. It's never going to be perfect and it's better than it was ten years ago. Thanks Mayor White. If the HP can't find any real stories to report you should just start posting pictures of cute cats because ain't none of this news to anyone. Of course if it's your OpEd piece then I take it all back.

Driving in Houston is always thrilling, but the traffic in Austin is much worse now than in H-Town. MUCH worse.

It's like what that guy in 'Repo Man' said - "driving makes you less intelligent. "

FYI Bryce, my computor would not let me open the link. It said that blogs.houstonpress had malicious malware and it had been blocked. I sure it was an interesting article on Houston traffic/drivers.

Is it really worse than 290 from the Beltway on to 610?  Hardly a day goes by that, on the morning traffic report, I don't hear of some sort of wreck or other form of congestion on that road.

What's funny is that they don't even MENTION the madness that happens on I-45! It's hell, no matter what kind of accidents there are. Morning, Mid-day, Afternoon - it's always terrible! 59 is actually our LEAST congested and traffic-ridden freeway!

let the idiots stay on the freeways! don't tell them about the secret ways to get around it or they'll just ruin everything!

Needed to get to Beechnut and 610 from Sugar Land and 59 last night. Decided to just take Beechnut from 59 all the way down to 610. Got there at least 15 minutes faster than if I hadn't taken the exchange.

Bring back the traffic lights cameras. Soo many red light running accidents it's unbelievable. And all these out of state drivers!!

Trying to exit Chimney Rock going southbound on 59 is a total bitch. One time, drivers would not let me pass and I had to exit Fountainview!

Apparently you haven't experienced Austin during rush hour on a weekday on i-35.

Did you really just tell people the tricks to avoid the interchange? Great, now I have deal with idiots on my back roads...

I just made a moving decision based mostly on avoiding 59, 45 and the west side of 610. I work in Greenspoint and decided to move to Seabrook so I could take the beltway around and avoid all the traffic. Yes, I could've gone for East Houston, but Seabrook has water fronts. Anything on the west side has traffic jams. I wish Houston had a decent public transportation option, but it taking 2 hours to travel 20 mins just isn't doable as a single mom.

@vanessaman24 Do you have a phone number we can reach you to find out what and when we can comment on something?

H_e_x
H_e_x

@partipatil05 45 is a special place. When people don't act like assholes, it's smooth and painfree. But no, we can't have that because people feel the need to merge at the last second.

sherylgonzales

@Amy Lephew  From Seabrook or Kemah, I can drive to the Bay Area Park & Ride, board the express bus nonstop and get off in downtown in 45 minutes flat. That's if the stop lights are with me.

Based on the comments, it seems like you're the one who started with the insults. Just saying...

H_e_x
H_e_x

@vanessaman24 @H_e_x Ah, the "I can say whatever I want, but god help if someone else comments back " defense. It's a lovely tactic used to preclude any sort of discussion because you have the right to speak but other people aren't allowed to comment back. Throw in some insults about intelligence (the misspellings and poor grammar make them deliciously ironic) and you have an example of someone who does not like to be challenged, let alone gently poked.

Just for future reference, should I ask permission to comment in all caps?

vanessaman24
vanessaman24

@H_e_x @vanessaman24 Why don't you go ask the person who raised you.  If you need to be so stupid and make those remarks perhaps you need to go someplace else.  I hope one day you learn manners, but wait, I forgot, you don't have any.  And perhaps at your age never will learn.  Vete y metete tus comentarios por donde no te da el sol.  Pobre de la madre que te pario porque no sabe la persona tan imprudente y mal educada que trajo al mundo.  SpenD YOUR TIME TRANSLATING BECAUSE I CAN COMMENT WHICHEVER WAY I WANT, WHATEVER I WANT AND IT IS MY CHOICE TO PUT UP WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU OR SIMPLY JUST SAY THE TRUTH, MORONS BELONG AT YOUR PLACE. AND THERE IS PLENTY OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

H_e_x
H_e_x

@vanessaman24 Unfortunately I don't wear hats all that well. Am I allowed to comment on that?

vanessaman24
vanessaman24

Keeper of comments?   I merely expressed my opinion.  If that brings the stupid in you(or perhaps you are as stupid as you sound) hat is your problem.  You can differ all that you want, but there is no need to insult somebody because s/he does not agree with you.  You can differ or concur, but there is no need to be stupid in the process.

H_e_x
H_e_x

@vanessaman24 @H_e_x Can I comment on not having a mind of my own? I'm being serious, and you've obviously tried to establish that you are the keeper of comments. I am deferring to your judgment. Can I also pencil in an appointment to discuss the possibility of talking about various ointments?

H_e_x
H_e_x

@partipatil05 @H_e_x True that, and if they do use them they put them on at the last second as they are moving into the other lane.
