That dude from NCIS can't help you.
My favorite day of the year is October 1. I carries with it both excitement and the promise of more. The first wisps of cool air will likely have breezed through our area teasing us for what is to come. Hurricane season, though not over for the entire Atlantic, is, for all intents and purposes, over for those of us along the Texas coast. The holidays are just weeks away. All the stuff you wish for in the middle of summer when it is 100 degrees and you want to punch every person who stands too close to you because the last thing you need is their body heat adding to the muggy misery you are living in at the moment.

For sports fans, this is the crossroads of virtually everything good in the world. Football season, both college and pro, is underway. NBA training camps are opening. The baseball playoffs are starting and hockey fans are getting into the start of the NHL season. Even soccer fan is getting ready for the MLS playoffs. It's a glorious time to be alive.

Conversely, my least favorite day of the year is July 1. The NBA playoffs are over, football is long gone and even the NHL is in hibernation. Sure, the Dynamo are playing and that's good, but the Astros are forcing us through another summer of torture. Frankly, even when they are playing well, there's only so much one-sport enjoyment a person can have.

There are also the occasional televised events worth watching. Every four years, we get the Olympics. There are major golf tournaments and grand slams in tennis. But, for the most part, we are in the doldrums.

The good news is that you are now free to catch up on all that stuff you put off the rest of the year. Talk to your kids. They've grown a lot since you last paid super close attention to them and not the TV. Do some work in the yard. It's fun even if you are trying to avoid heat stroke in the process. Get started on the project you've been meaning to finish: building the grill/cooler/flatscreen TV/stereo rolling unit for roadies.

The other good news is that even though most of your favorite sports are gone for a while, it's not long before they are back. The first preseason game is August 9 and training camp starts in just about three-and-a-half weeks. So, enjoy the down time and get some rest because the best time of year will be back before you know it.
