Perry to Obama: It's the Video Games, Not the Guns. Let Us Pray.

perrygun092211.jpg
WOO!
In response to President Barack Obama's executive orders mostly relating to the sale and possession of firearms, Governor Rick Perry issued a release that sounds like it was pulled directly from the talking points of the National Rifle Association, which isn't all that surprising considering his support of the organization and his support for fewer gun control restrictions. Perry pushed hard to repeal the ban on guns on college campuses, a measure that ultimately failed.

In a sharply-worded message to Obama, Perry said the use of children to advance a "pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children, disgusts me, personally." He, like the NRA, blames violence in movies, video games and "online fascinations" (whatever that means) finding their way "into vulnerable hearts and minds" as the culprit, not the guns themselves.

To sum up, weak-minded idiots easily swayed by Grand Theft Auto are responsible for gun violence at places like Sandy Hook Elementary, not assault weapons.

The issue for many with Perry's stance on gun rights is not that he is entirely wrong. Violent films, video games and online "fascinations" may very well play a role in escalating violence, particularly among young people, and there certainly should be a conversation to address those potential problems. The problem is that Perry and the NRA don't want to tackle all the issues involving gun violence because it would mean actually talking about guns. For Perry, in addition to less gun control, he thinks the solution to gun violence is to pray (didn't he say the same thing about the drought?) "Let us return to our places of worship and pray for help," the release said. "Above all, let us pray for our children."

His full statement is below:

"The Vice President's committee was appointed in response to the tragedy at Newtown, but very few of his recommendations have anything to do with what happened there.

"Guns require a finger to pull the trigger. The sad young man who did that in Newtown was clearly haunted by demons and no gun law could have saved the children in Sandy Hook Elementary from his terror.

"There is evil prowling in the world - it shows up in our movies, video games and online fascinations, and finds its way into vulnerable hearts and minds. As a free people, let us choose what kind of people we will be. Laws, the only redoubt of secularism, will not suffice. Let us all return to our places of worship and pray for help. Above all, let us pray for our children.

"In fact, the piling on by the political left, and their cohorts in the media, to use the massacre of little children to advance a pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children, disgusts me, personally. The second amendment to the Constitution is a basic right of free people and cannot be nor will it be abridged by the executive power of this or any other president."

Rick doesn't go far enough, the Second Amendment should allow each citizen to own more for his self defense against this Socialist regime! Armed helicopters, private PT boats, flame-throwers, fully auto guns, explosives, all the rest, including poison gas fired from special shells in my new pistol. Why in god's name place any limitations on what we need to defend ourselves? If it's really for protection against a tyrannical gov't, let's allow each citizen to own those measures which would allow a fair fight against King Obama! C'mon Rick don't be so wimpy

Rick, don't just pray, cause apparently God ain't listening.

I'm with the courageous presidents: Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush and Obama. Get rid of these guns, high capacity clips and excess ammo. I'm with 90% of the population: do effective universal background checks for gun buyers. Close the loopholes. I'm with others who promote that mental healthcare providers communicate about potential patient problems, patients who shouldn't be able to buy guns.

I hunt. I buy guns. I'm ashamed of the NRA leadership and buffoons like Rick Perry who say we should do nothing except pray. Even HGW Bush resigned his lifetime membership to the NRA confronted with such goofy profiteering over guns and the attendant arguments.

No_PC_BS

@brightonbeach  Yes, because if we ban the importation of those scary black guns and those long "clips", they'll magically disappear! Total ignorance.

This pic sums up why Perry went down in flames once the primary electorate (gasp, think of the general election) got more acquainted with him: there's no actual mind behind his gun-slingin' brashness. There's plenty of faith and plenty of party platitude, but no mind that creatively formulates any real solution to any problem. It's the reason he "forgot" a main plank of his candidacy and had to say ooops.

How can you really argue with Perry?  I can't stand the man but he's right.  And where is the Mental Health crowd?  Why are they so silent every time a nut job grabs a gun?

Restrict nut jobs, not guns.

@Craigley So would it be ok if mental health doctors communicated to a central clearing house about patients they felt would be a threat were they allow to purchase guns?

I mean that's one proposal, it's not like you can wave a wand and eliminate mental illness. The other poster here said something about mental illness treatment but didn't provide any specific ideas.

King O does alot of praying himself. Why no snide jokes about him, hmmmm?

"First and foremost, my Christian faith gives me a perspective and security that I don't think I would have otherwise: that I am loved. That, at the end of the day, God is in control."

"Faith has always provided a moral framework and vocabulary for this country to come to terms with its most pressing challenges. One of the great things about this nation is that it is a place where people from all walks of life can advocate on behalf of their faith and beliefs and be open about what drives and motivates them."

"I have a job to do as president, and that does not involve convincing folks that my faith in Jesus is legitimate and real. I do my best to live out my faith, and to stay in the Word, and to make my life look more like His."

"Lord give me the strength to meet the challenges of my office..." to "Lord, give me patience as I watch Malia go to her first dance where there will be boys. Lord, let that skirt become longer as she travels to that dance."

"My prayer this morning is that we might see the face of God each and every day, as we go through the hustle and bustle of our lives, that we rise above the here and now and kneel before the eternal. Remember that 'those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

@No_PC_BS  Maybe because Obama doesn't advance prayer as a solution to those things which ail us, those things which government policy and a shift in attitude can impact and lessen?

Gun violence? Pray it away. Kids smoking too much? Pray it away. Man made climate problems...pray. Wealth going to 1% of the population, stagnating incomes, turn to the lord and ask a favor. Someone's sick and can't afford to see a doctor....let us all pray together and mention his name in church.

At some point, merely talking to an invisible being whose very existence is doubtful, not to mention his personal sense of mercy and justice, well that strikes many as literally crazy as a public policy response. It's an abdication of responsibility, not a solution.

Whereas Obama seems able to do both, pray privately and act publicly toward a solution.

No_PC_BS
No_PC_BS

@auslander I think you need to go back and read the link again. Obama admits  his faith guides some of his policies no matter how much you try to play it off.

Also, you claim all Perry does is pray instead of acting. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ignorance is not an excuse.

@No_PC_BS @Dunstan Let me help you while you scrub in wait: he is saying that a reasonable person might infer from his policies that Obama doesn't take the bible literally. An example would be equal pay for equal work. Another example might be we don't stone women for adultery. Or deny a position in the military based on the sex of who someone loves. Now, if he believed in all the bible and it really guided all that he does, those policies would not make sense.
