Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that happened on the North Sam Houston Parkway service road around 12:10 a.m. on Sunday. Apparently an unidentified male victim, 38, drove at a high rate of speed through a construction zone and was killed when his vehicle hit a concrete support pillar.

The police report says the vehicle, a Kia Soul (um, what?), was driving fast through the construction area when it jumped a curb and hit the pillar. The driver was ejected from the car as a result and was pronounced dead when paramedics transported him to Ben Taub General Hospital.

First off, why would you haul ass through a construction zone? A few weeks ago, I got confused along the construction of the new light rail line on Fulton near Northline Mall and accidentally drove in between a couple cones into an area that was clearly not meant for vehicles. I was doing about 10 mph when I stopped and made my way carefully back onto the main road. Whenever those orange warning cones pop up, my first thought isn't normally to speed up.

Second, a Kia Soul? This is not exactly the vehicle one would think of when it came to racing at a high rate of speed. These are more the "cruising through midtown on your way to the dance club" cars or "mom picking up the kids from soccer practice" cars, and you know she obeys the traffic laws.

The lesson here is, no matter what kind of car you own, be it a Dodge Dart, an AMC Pacer or a freaking Lamborghini, don't drive hella fast through a construction zone in the middle of the night.
