Boy, this could have been a lot worse...
Houston police arrested a 14-year-old student who brought a loaded handgun to Sterling High School today.

The gun was confiscated and the boy was taken "into custody without incident" about 10:48 a.m., according to a Houston Independent School District press release. The boy's name was not released. Sterling High is located on Martindale Road in southeast Houston.

Per the release, campus officers received a tip from Houston Police Department officers that the student may have used the gun to "threaten an individual off campus on Tuesday afternoon," and that he may have brought the gun to school with him Wednesday.

The student "told HISD police he was carrying the weapon to protect himself from gang members in the neighborhood surrounding the school."

HISD spokesman James Spencer told us that the individual the boy is alleged to have threatened was not a student at Sterling, but he could not provide other details. He could not provide the make or caliber of the weapon.

"Appropriate disciplinary action is being taken, and the incident has been referred to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for criminal prosecution," according to the release. "Sterling High School parents are being informed about the incident by phone today."
