Pflugerville ISD tackles tough issue
As we noted yesterday they planned to do, the citizens of the Pflugerville school district made their voices heard about a new policy giving gay employees the same couples benefits that straights get.

Hill Country media reports said the PISD hearing room was standing room only, even though the new policy was not on the meeting agenda and therefore could not be discussed by board members.

That didn't stop residents from speaking out, of course. Many complained the new policy was instituted by superintendent Charles Dupre without sufficient notice.

"I recognize this is a diverse community and not everyone is going to hold the exact same values," said Steve Clem, pastor of Pflugerville Community Church. "I understand that and respect that. But it feels like the values of a significant part of this community was purposely ignored."

Others carried signs saying they were proud of the district for its decision.

Dupre said at the time the policy was announced that the district was "going to advocate for equity and social justice and set expectations for valuing our employees. We went into this knowing with our eyes open that there'd be people who weren't supportive of the idea, but we'd been having hard discussions about social justice."

Employees began enrolling in the program this week, and coverage begins with the new year.

It seems to me the values of a significant part of the community had been purposely ignored for quite some time enough.
