Six HPD Officers To Be Honored By Governor For Above-And-Beyond Services Rendered

Governor Rick Perry will honor six Houston police officers tomorrow for the service they gave the public, service that left them wounded from gunshots or other actions.

The officers will receive the Star of Texas Award, which "were created to honor and commemorate selected first responders who made profound commitments while performing their duties as peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders," HPD says.

The ceremony will take place tomorrow in the chamber of the House of Representatives in Austin.

Among the officers to be recognized, for events dating back to 2007, with the HPD description of the relevant incident:

-- Officer Osvaldo Gutierrez, of the Westside Patrol Division: On February 22, 2008, Officer Gutierrez was shot and wounded in the line of duty while attempting to arrest two motor vehicle burglary suspects in the parking lot of a shopping center in northwest Houston.
-- Senior Police Officer Victor Hill, of the Northwest Patrol Division: On October 27, 2007, Officer Hill was shot and wounded in the line of duty while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect at an apartment complex in northwest Houston.
-- Officer Nainash S. Patel, of the Narcotics Division: On February 24, 2011, Officer Patel was shot and wounded in the line of duty while assisting in a large-scale narcotics undercover operation at a residence in north Houston.
-- Retired Senior Police Officer Isidro Perez, of the Traffic Enforcement Division: On July 6, 2010, Officer Perez suffered several broken bones and serious injuries while conducting a traffic stop on the Gulf Freeway near Edgebrook.
-- Officer Jeffrey Werner, of the Juvenile Division and Officer John Horelica, of the Midwest Patrol Division: On February 24, 2007, Officers Werner and Horelica suffered extensive injuries after being struck by an intoxicated driver while trying to arrest an assault suspect in southwest Houston.
