5 Most Overrated Players in College Football

If you can identify this dreadful creature, then you'll know the most overrated player in college football.

College football's media days are done, the preseason picks for top teams and players in.

"And why did you pick him?" we sit here scratching our heads.

A majority of these guys on this list made either Athlon Sports's first, second or third All-American teams.

5. Geno Smith, West Virginia Quarterback
The Big 12 media loves West Virginia, picking the new guys to finish second behind Oklahoma. And the reason they're going to do that is because Geno Smith, who broke WVU's single-season passing yards record last season, is back under center? Hold up, now. He's no Barkley, Jones or Tyler Wilson in terms of arm strength and his durability has been an issue. Plus, program wrecker Dana Holgorsen is Smith's coach.

These rankings are coming from the same reporter who said Dana Holgorsen and Oliver Luck were program wreckers and were in the process of destroying WVU's program just a little over a year ago. Since that report WVU (with Holgorsen as head coach) has one the Big East Conference Championship, beat Clemson 70-33 in the Orange Bowl, and secured a spot in one of the best conferences in the country, the Big 12. There are some top notch reporters coming out of Houston I see.

Meh. He's got an ego that rivals the most stereotypical Texan and his mouth is always running but with guys throwing away from Claiborne who everyone knew was the better CB, Mathieu's coverage assignments scored 0 TDs in 2011. He is a sure tackler in the open field despite being underszed with 59 solo tackles last season. He forced 6 fumbles, recovered 5 fumbles, returned 2 fumbles for TDs and returned one to the 1 yard line against WVU. And that's in addition to his ST play. Will he repeat it? Hard to imagine how, but that was a pretty impressive season.
